Anwar's prosecutor made judge in Malaysia's top court by Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (AFP) - The man who oversaw the
controversial prosecutions of Malaysia's Anwar Ibrahim was Tuesday
made a judge in the country's highest court.

Mohtar Abdullah, who retired as attorney-general last month, was
sworn
in as a federal court judge after receiving his appointment letter
from the
                    king.

"I am most grateful to God for this appointment and will continue
to serve
the country as long as I am needed," Bernama news agency quoted him
                    as saying.

Mohtar, who served as attorney-general for seven years, had said
on his
last day in office that history would be the judge of his tenure.

The conduct of the prosecution against Anwar, who was sacked in
September 1998 as deputy premier, sparked strong criticism
overseas.

Anwar is serving a total of 15 years in jail after being convicted
in
separate trials of abusing his official powers and of sodomy.

Anwar says his former mentor, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad,
orchestrated a conspiracy to frame him because he was seen as a
political
threat. The government denies any plot.

Also appointed to the federal court were former court of appeal
judges
Siti Norma Yaacob and Haidar Mohamed Noor. They and Mohtar took
their oath of office before the new chief justice Dzaiddin
Abdullah.

Dzaiddin's appointment last month, and his pledges to restore the
judiciary's tarnished image, won wide local support.

Mohtar, 56, is the youngest person to be appointed a federal court
judge.
Siti Norma, 60, is the first woman on its bench.
