Israelīs Targeted Killings May Backfire

by our Internet Desk, 28 August 2001

Israeli tanks rolled into the Palestinian-controlled
town of Beit Jala near Bethlehem early on Tuesday in a
bid to silence gunfire on the nearby Jewish settlement
of Gilo. It followed a warning from Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon that he would send Israeli tanks into
beit Jala if Palestinian gunmen resumed firing on the
settlement.

That gunfire came on Monday, just hours after Israel
had killed Abu Ali Mustafa, head of the Popular Front
for the Liberation of Palestine in a rocket attack on
his office. The continued tit-for-tat attacks have led
to further escalation of the long drawn-out conflict.

Palestinian Cabinet member Yasser Abed Rabbo called
the Israel's temporary re-occupation of the autonomous
Palestinian town a further step on the road to all-out
war. He added that Palestinians reserved every right
to defend themselves.

The Israeli move came a day after the elimination of
PFLP leader Abu Ali Mustafa, the highest profile
Palestinian leader to be killed to date in a series of
what Israel calls 'targeted killings' of Palestinians
linked to terrorist attacks.

Mixed Press Reaction
Israeli Monday's assassination provoked mixed
reactions in the Israeli media. Many commentators
stress that the Popular Front had lost much of its
support in recent years. Others note that the targeted
killing has Ali Abu Mustafa into a new popular hero
and that the Palestinians will now close ranks in
protest.

Daniel Sobelman interviewed by Robert Chesal, 3ī30"

Daniel Sobelman, Arab affairs correspondent for
Ha'aretz newspaper, says today's headlines in the Arab
press reflect a general state of shock within the
Palestinian community in Israel.

"Abu Ali Mustafa was the most important Palestinian to
be killed since the start of the Intifadah. It should
be stressed that this was a limited decision, taken by
only two members of the cabinet: Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon and Defence Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer.
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres told the press this
morning that he was left out of the picture. His
statement reflects widespread criticism in Israel that
the assassinations have gone too far and will not have
any positive effect."

Counterproductive
The Ha'aretz correspondent stresses that Israel's
policy of assassinating suspected Palestinian
terrorists may well backfire.

"If we look at the history of these targeted killings:
the 1992 assassination of Hizbollah leader Abbas
Musawi in Lebanon proved counterproductive. Hizbollah
grew bigger and bigger and they retaliated by blowing
up the Israeli embassy and the Jewish community
building in Buenos Aires, killing scores of both Jews
and Israelis. Nothing positive happened after the 1988
assassination of Khalil el-Wazir, known as Abu Jihad,
who was Arafat's number-two in the PLO. The same goes
for Yahya Ayash, nicknamed the Engineer, who
orchestrated the first Hamas suicide attacks in the
mid-1990s. But his assassination only produced a new
breed of engineers with at least the same skills,
adding to the threats to Israel."
