Vote PAS for ‘heavenly’ rewards: booklet

Besides the usual poster war being waged in the run-up to next Thursday’s by-elections
in Kedah, PAS is embarking on a ‘divine’ campaign through the distribution of a
booklet exhorting voters in Pendang and Anak Bukit, Kedah to choose the Islamic party
“if they wish to go to heaven”.

Amid heavy criticism from rival Umno, the booklet entitled “Undi PAS dapat pahala”
(Vote PAS and beget merit) is being distributed from house to house, at ceramah
(public talks) and night markets since Tuesday.

Compiled by Tanjong Karang (Selangor) PAS Youth chief Mohd Rashdi Ab Rahman, the
booklet contains comments and thoughts of the party’s spiritual advisor, Nik Aziz Nik
Mat, on the question of pahala and dosa (merit and sin).

The topics include the Umno-PAS debate and Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo’s
alleged corruption.

The spiritual advisor also took a swipe at his counterpart in the Prime Minister’s
Department, Abdul Hamid Othman, over his alleged anti-Islamic stand.

PAS’ ‘divine’ strategies, which never fail to incarnate during elections, always irks
Umno as its members have to face the backlash and be labelled “un-Islamic” or
“infidels”.

The 16-page booklet also accused Umno of sinning by practising “racial politics,
corruption, mismanagement and abuse of funds as well as prohibiting ceramah in
mosques”.

“You get merit when you build mosques. If you allow people to ceramah within and
without the mosque, you can also receive merit,” Nik Aziz was quoted as saying.

In defending his statement that those who vote for the party will receive merit, he
said PAS is attempting to “get rid of evil and promote goodness” as set by the
teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

Umno can do the same

Nik Aziz, who is also Kelantan menteri besar, vowed to continue talking about merit
and sin since as long as the party battles evil and does good, its supporters will
gain merit in the hereafter.

“If Umno wants to say the same, they can do it. It is all right. Let the rakyat hear
it,” he said.

“Why is it when non-governmental organisations do charity they are said to have gained
merit but when a registered and constitutional party like PAS does the same, it is
said to be not receiving any merit?” he added.

Unlike Umno, the spiritual leader stressed, PAS bases its governance on the Quran and
Sunnah.

Nik Aziz claimed that Umno was a "confused" party, with its sincerity overshadowed by
pragmatism and opportunism.

The Pendang parliamentary and Anak Bukit state by-elections were called following the
death of PAS president Fadzil Noor on June 23.

Crucial for BN

For next week’s contest, PAS is fielding Dr Mohamad Hayati Othman against Barisan
Nasional’s Othman Abdul in Pendang and engineer Amiruddin Hamzah to take on the ruling
coalition candidate, Zakaria Said, in Anak Bukit.

In the 1999 general election, Fadzil defeated Othman, who is also the former
parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister’s Department, with a majority of 2,934
votes, polling 22,413 votes.

In Anak Bukit, Fadzil defeated Abdullah Hasnan Kamaruddin with a majority of 1,840
votes, garnering 8,480 votes.

The by-elections are crucial for BN which has seen its dominance in the Malay-majority
state of Kedah threatened by PAS and the opposition Barisan Alternatif coalition it
belongs to.

In 1999, PAS captured eight out of the 15 parliamentary seats in the state. It also
clinched 12 of the 36 state seats.
