"Dia PM ku" hot favourite for Palm D'Or/Oscars

Kuala Lumpur, Saturday - Surprise Malaysian blockbusting tearjerker "Dia PM ku"
(trans: "He's My Prime Minister") has stormed into contention for numerous major
international film awards including the prestigious Palm D'Or at the Cannes Film
Festival and multiple nominations at the Academy Awards.

The short film, which premiered on Saturday live on national TV, is a product of the
thriving Malaysian film industry (nicknamed "UMNO-wood" in deference to the more
famous Hollywood and Bollywood) and is a remake of the early Malaysian classic "Dia
Ibu Ku" (She's My Mother").

The star of the film, Malaysian PM Dr M (known to fans as Eminem or M&M), produced a
powerhouse performance reminiscent of Henry Fonda in "On Golden Pond" and Spencer
Tracey in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". His performance is expected to secure him a
nomination for Best Actor against such Hollywood favourites as Denzel Washington, Tom
Hanks and Tom Cruise.

Particularly touching was the scene when he was asked by a tearful Datin Rafidah Aziz
(who is also expected to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress): "Mengapa? Why?
What is the reason?".

His response: "Dalam ada" ("Inside there is a reason") will live in screen history for
its poignancy and brevity.

The star is now expected to take a break after his acting tour de force. His success
represents a rare occassion where a politician has made the cross into acting, a
reversal of the usual trend in India and the United States where actors become
politicians.

Other support actors worthy of mention were the many extras from UMNO Youth and Wanita
UMNO whose heart rending cries of "Jangan pergi, bang, jaaaaaangaaaaan ...!" will
bring a tear to many an eye. Also praiseworthy was the way English was worked into the
predominantly Bahasa Malaysia dialogue to allow empathy from an international audience
("No, no ... I have decided ... I have decided").

This short film represents a breakthrough hit for UMNO-wood after some lukewarm
responses to previous releases such as the multi episode saga "New Economic Plan"
episodes I to IV (Soros - The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Illegal Immigrant Clones,
Kampung Baru Strikes Back and NEP IV - A New Beginning), the expensive disaster movie
Armage-Proton, the comedy "Spend it Like Daim" (some say a copy of the recent British
comedy "Bend it Like Beckham") and the sci-fi thriller from independent arthouse DAP
"Minority Report".
