Fund to sell stake in firm printing books on Christianity

TABUNG Haji will dispose of its shares in Times Offset (M) Sdn Bhd which was
found to have printed books on Christianity, said parliamentary secretary to
the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Noh Omar.
"The Government is looking for other bumiputra firms to buy the stake owned
by Tabung Haji,'' he said.
So far, no company had shown interest in purchasing the shares, he said when
winding up the Budget debate at committee stage.
Earlier, Taib Azamudden Mohd Taib (PAS - Baling) accused Tabung Haji of
mismanaging the monies entrusted to it by having a joint venture to print
Christian books.
He said Times Offset had printed books with titles like The Lion Book of
First Prayers and All About Jesus.
"I have nothing against Christians or the religion.
"But Tabung Haji is abusing the trust of Muslims, and money which are meant
to perform the Haj has instead been channelled into printing Bibles,'' he
said.
He showed the House two copies of the books.
Taib also criticised Tabung Haji for appointing officers without regard to
existing guidelines, and paying them inflated salaries.
"For instance, an administrative officer appointed on a contractual basis
was paid a monthly salary of RM35,000.
"Two other officers in the Finance and the Human Resources Division have
salaries of RM23,000 and RM18,000 respectively,'' he said.
However, Noh said these officers were from the professional group and

Datuk Ruhanie Ahmad (BN - Parit Sulong) urged Deputy Housing and Local
Government Minister Datuk M. Kayveas to "repent'' from his statement at the
opening of the PPP general assembly last weekend.
"He has called for non-bumiputras born in this country after 1957 to be
accorded bumiputra status. This is equivalent to questioning the privileges
and special rights of the Malays which are protected under the Federal
Constitution.
"His statement has the potential to rouse ill feelings among the different
races in the country and could be seditious,'' he argued.
