another option is CVS, which allows for the same check
in/check out I belive

We also use CVS.
On our mod team, there's two developers living 1000 miles apart..
Except for one newbie mistake I made first time using it, we've never
stomped on each other's code.. As long as everyone remembers to update
their local copy before comitting it back to the repository, it works
