There is not a whole lot anyone can do about steam servers being down.

Yes, right now the return is 7 if out of date, 0 (success) if up to
date. The 7 is only to differentiate version check failures from python
failures.
e.g.
./srcupdatecheck tf/steam.inf
ret=$?
if [ $ret -eq 0 ]; then
echo Up to date
elif [ $ret -eq 7 ]; then
echo Out of date
else
I think Steam should really put effort on solving issues like No-Steam
Logons (Authentication) issues...
