Bamidbar, starting at chapter 1
{1:1} The LORD spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, in the
Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second
year after they had come out of the land of Mitzrayim, saying, {1:2}
"Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, by
their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of
the names, every male, one by one; {1:3} from twenty years old and
upward, all who are able to go out to war in Yisra'el. You and Aharon
shall number them by their divisions. {1:4} With you there shall be a
man of every tribe; everyone head of his fathers' house. {1:5} These
are the names of the men who shall stand with you:
Of Re'uven: Elitzur the son of Shede'ur.
{1:6} Of Shim`on: Shelumi'el the son of Tzurishaddai.
{1:7} Of Yehudah: Nachshon the son of `Amminadav.
{1:8} Of Yissakhar: Netan'el the son of Tzu`ar.
{1:9} Of Zevulun: Eli'av the son of Helon.
{1:10} Of the children of Yosef:

{1:11} Of Binyamin: Avidan the son of Gid`oni.
{1:12} Of Dan: Achi`ezer the son of `Ammishaddai.
{1:13} Of Asher: Pag`i'el the son of `Okhran.
{1:14} Of Gad: Elyasaf the son of De`u'el.
{1:15} Of Naftali: Achira the son of `Enan."
{1:16} These are those who were called of the congregation, the
princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the
thousands of Yisra'el. {1:17} Moshe and Aharon took these men who are
mentioned by name. {1:18} They assembled all the congregation together
on the first day of the second month; and they declared their ancestry
by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number
of the names, from twenty years old and upward, one by one. {1:19} As
the LORD commanded Moshe, so he numbered them in the wilderness of
Sinai.
{1:20} The children of Re'uven, Yisra'el's firstborn, their
generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to
the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old
and upward, all who were able to go out to war; {1:21} those who were
numbered of them, of the tribe of Re'uven, were forty-six thousand
five hundred.
{1:22} Of the children of Shim`on, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, those who were numbered of it,
according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from
twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
{1:23} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Shim`on, were
fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
{1:24} Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families,
by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from
twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war;
{1:25} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were
forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
{1:26} Of the children of Yehudah, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out
to war; {1:27} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Yehudah, were sixty-four thousand six hundred.
{1:28} Of the children of Yissakhar, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out
to war; {1:29} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Yissakhar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
{1:30} Of the children of Zevulun, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out
to war; {1:31} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Zevulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. {1:32} Of the
children of Yosef, of the children of Efrayim, their generations, by
thir families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of
the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go
out to war; {1:33} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Efrayim, were forty thousand five hundred.
{1:34} Of the children of Menashsheh, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out
to war; {1:35} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Menashsheh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
{1:36} Of the children of Binyamin, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out
to war; {1:37} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Binyamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
{1:38} Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families,
by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from
twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war;
{1:39} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were
sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
{1:40} Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth
to war; {1:41} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher,
were forty-one thousand five hundred.
{1:42} Of the children of Naftali, their generations, by their
families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the
names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth
to war; {1:43} those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of
Naftali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
{1:44} These are those who were numbered, whom Moshe and Aharon
numbered, and the princes of Yisra'el, being twelve men: they were
each one for his fathers' house. {1:45} So all those who were numbered
of the children of Yisra'el by their fathers' houses, from twenty
years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Yisra'el;
{1:46} even all those who were numbered were six hundred three
thousand five hundred fifty. {1:47} But the Levites after the tribe of
their fathers were not numbered among them. {1:48} For the LORD spoke
to Moshe, saying, {1:49} "Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number,
neither shall you take a census of them among the children of
Yisra'el; {1:50} but appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the
Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to
it. They shall carry the tabernacle, and all its furnishings; and they
shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it. {1:51} When the
tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the
tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger
who comes near shall be put to death. {1:52} The children of Yisra'el
shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by
his own standard, according to their divisions. {1:53} But the Levites
shall encamp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be
no wrath on the congregation of the children of Yisra'el: and the
Levites shall be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony."
{1:54} Thus the children of Yisra'el did. According to all that the
LORD commanded Moshe, so they did.
{2:1} The LORD spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying, {2:2} "The
children of Yisra'el shall encamp every man by his own standard, with
the ensigns of their fathers' houses: at a distance from the tent of
meeting shall they encamp around it."
{2:3} Those who encamp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be
of the standard of the camp of Yehudah, according to their divisions:
and the prince of the children of Yehudah shall be Nachshon the son of
`Amminadav. {2:4} His division, and those who were numbered of them,
were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
{2:5} Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Yissakhar:
and the prince of the children of Yissakhar shall be Netan'el the son
of Tzu`ar. {2:6} His division, and those who were numbered of it, were
fifty-four thousand four hundred.
{2:7} The tribe of Zevulun: and the prince of the children of
Zevulun shall be Eli'av the son of Helon. {2:8} His division, and
those who were numbered of it, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
{2:9} All who were numbered of the camp of Yehudah were one hundred
eighty-six thousand four hundred, according to their divisions. They
shall set out first.
{2:10} "On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of
Re'uven according to their divisions. The prince of the children of
Re'uven shall be Elitzur the son of Shede'ur. {2:11} His division, and
those who were numbered of it, were forty-six thousand five hundred.
{2:12} "Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Shim`on.
The prince of the children of Shim`on shall be Shelumi'el the son of
Tzurishaddai. {2:13} His division, and those who were numbered of
them, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
{2:14} "The tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad
shall be Elyasaf the son of Re`u'el. {2:15} His division, and those
who were numbered of them, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
{2:16} "All who were numbered of the camp of Re'uven were one
hundred fifty-one thousand four hundred fifty, according to their
hosts. They shall set out second.
{2:17} "Then the tent of meeting shall set out, with the camp of the
Levites in the midst of the camps. As they encamp, so shall they set
out, every man in his place, by their standards.
{2:18} "On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of
Efrayim according to their divisions: and the prince of the children
of Efrayim shall be Elishama the son of `Ammihud. {2:19} His division,
and those who were numbered of them, were forty thousand five hundred.
{2:20} "Next to him shall be the tribe of Menashsheh: and the prince
of the children of Menashsheh shall be Gamli'el the son of Pedatzur.
{2:21} His division, and those who were numbered of them, were
thirty-two thousand two hundred.
{2:22} "The tribe of Binyamin: and the prince of the children of
Binyamin shall be Avidan the son of Gid`oni. {2:23} His host, and
those who were numbered of them, were thirty-five thousand four
hundred.
{2:24} "All who were numbered of the camp of Efrayim were one
hundred eight thousand one hundred, according to their divisions. They
shall set out third.
{2:25} "On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan
according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Dan
shall be Achi`ezer the son of `Ammishaddai. {2:26} His division, and
those who were numbered of them, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
{2:27} "Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher:
and the prince of the children of Asher shall be Pag`i'el the son of
`Okhran. {2:28} His division, and those who were numbered of them,
were forty-one thousand and five hundred.
{2:29} "The tribe of Naftali: and the prince of the children of
Naftali shall be Achira the son of `Enan. {2:30} His division, and
those who were numbered of them, were fifty-three thousand four
hundred.
{2:31} "All who were numbered of the camp of Dan were one hundred
fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They shall set out last by their
standards."
{2:32} These are those who were numbered of the children of Yisra'el
by their fathers' houses. All who were numbered of the camps according
to their hosts were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
{2:33} But the Levites were not numbered among the children of
Yisra'el; as the LORD commanded Moshe.
{2:34} Thus the children of Yisra'el did. According to all that the
LORD commanded Moshe, so they encamped by their standards, and so they
set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers'
houses.
{3:1} Now this is the history of the generations of Aharon and Moshe
in the day that the LORD spoke with Moshe in Mount Sinai. {3:2} These
are the names of the sons of Aharon: Nadav the firstborn, and Avihu,
El`azar, and Itamar.
{3:3} These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the [1>]Kohanim[<1]
who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the
[2>]Kohen[<2]'s office. {3:4} Nadav and Avihu died before the LORD,
when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of
Sinai, and they had no children. El`azar and Itamar ministered in the
[3>]Kohen[<3]'s office in the presence of Aharon their father.
{3:5} The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, {3:6} "Bring the tribe of
Levi near, and set them before Aharon the [4>]Kohen[<4], that they may
minister to him. {3:7} They shall keep his charge, and the charge of
the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service
of the tabernacle. {3:8} They shall keep all the furnishings of the
Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Yisra'el, to
do the service of the tabernacle. {3:9} You shall give the Levites to
Aharon and to his sons. They are wholly given to him on the behalf of
the children of Yisra'el. {3:10} You shall appoint Aharon and his
sons, and they shall keep their priesthood. The stranger who comes
near shall be put to death."
{3:11} The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, {3:12} "Behold, I have taken
the Levites from among the children of Yisra'el instead of all the
firstborn who open the womb among the children of Yisra'el; and the
Levites shall be mine: {3:13} for all the firstborn are mine. On the
day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim I
made holy to me all the firstborn in Yisra'el, both man and animal.
They shall be mine. I am the LORD."
{3:14} The LORD spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
{3:15} "Number the children of Levi by their fathers' houses, by their
families: every male from a month old and upward shall you number."
{3:16} Moshe numbered them according to the word of the LORD, as he
was commanded.
{3:17} These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and
Kehat, and Merari.
{3:18} These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families:
Livni and Shim`i.
{3:19} The sons of Kehat by their families: `Amram, and Yitzhar,
Hevron, and `Uzzi'el.
{3:20} The sons of Merari by their families: Machli and Mushi.
These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers'
houses.
{3:21} Of Gershon was the family of the Livni, and the family of the
Shim`i: these are the families of the Gershoni.
{3:22} Those who were numbered of them, according to the number of
all the males, from a month old and upward, even those who were
numbered of them were seven thousand five hundred.
{3:23} The families of the Gershoni shall encamp behind the
tabernacle westward.
{3:24} The prince of the fathers' house of the Gershoni shall be
Elyasaf the son of La'el. {3:25} The charge of the sons of Gershon in
the Tent of Meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the tent, its
covering, and the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting, {3:26}
and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the
court, which is by the tabernacle, and around the altar, and its cords
for all of its service.
{3:27} Of Kehat was the family of the `Amrami, and the family of the
Izharites, and the family of the Hevroni, and the family of the
`Uzzi'eli: these are the families of the Kehati. {3:28} According to
the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were
eight thousand six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.
{3:29} The families of the sons of Kehat shall encamp on the south
side of the tabernacle. {3:30} The prince of the fathers' house of the
families of the Kehati shall be Elitzafan the son of `Uzzi'el. {3:31}
Their charge shall be the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars,
the vessels of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen,
and all its service. {3:32} El`azar the son of Aharon the
[5>]Kohen[<5] shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, with the
oversight of those who keep the charge of the sanctuary.
{3:33} Of Merari was the family of the Machli, and the family of the
Mushi. These are the families of Merari. {3:34} Those who were
numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a
month old and upward, were six thousand two hundred.
{3:35} The prince of the fathers' house of the families of Merari
was Tzuri'el the son of Avichayil. They shall encamp on the north side
of the tabernacle. {3:36} The appointed charge of the sons of Merari
shall be the tabernacle's boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets,
all its instruments, all its service, {3:37} the pillars of the court
around it, their sockets, their pins, and their cords. {3:38} Those
who encamp before the tabernacle eastward, in front of the Tent of
Meeting toward the sunrise, shall be Moshe, and Aharon and his sons,
keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of
Yisra'el. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death. {3:39}
All who were numbered of the Levites, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered
at the [6>]mitzvah[<6] of the LORD, by their families, all the males
from a month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand.
{3:40} The LORD said to Moshe, "Number all the firstborn males of
the children of Yisra'el from a month old and upward, and take the
number of their names. {3:41} You shall take the Levites for me (I am
the LORD) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Yisra'el;
and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the
cattle of the children of Yisra'el."
{3:42} Moshe numbered, as the LORD commanded him, all the firstborn
among the children of Yisra'el. {3:43} All the firstborn males
according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of
those who were numbered of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred
seventy-three.
{3:44} The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, {3:45} "Take the Levites
instead of all the firstborn among the children of Yisra'el, and the
cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall
be mine. I am the LORD. {3:46} For the redemption of the two hundred
seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Yisra'el, who exceed
the number of the Levites, {3:47} you shall take five shekels apiece
for each one; after the shekel of the sanctuary you shall take them
(the shekel is twenty gerahs): {3:48} and you shall give the money,
with which the remainder of them is redeemed, to Aharon and to his
sons."
{3:49} Moshe took the redemption money from those who exceeded the
number of those who were redeemed by the Levites; {3:50} from the
firstborn of the children of Yisra'el he took the money, one thousand
three hundred sixty-five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:
{3:51} and Moshe gave the redemption money to Aharon and to his sons,
according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moshe.
