By pulling the tuning slide out a bit as soon as you need
the mute to be put in. A modern (cone) mute should have an
adjustment screw to move the inner part up or down. There is
another way: just pull the cone mute out a bit while playing

I know that it is probably a drag to set your slides painstakingly each
time you take the horn out of the case, but I have always (well, for at
lest twenty or thirty years) shoved them all the way back in before
returning the horn to the case.
