I bought an Alexander 103 in 1980 with money I saved from my gap-year job between school university. I've never regretted the purchase and I still use the same horn. I talked through the choice of instrument with my teacher Douglas Moore. Once we established that my budget ran to an Alex, he

I believe that Alexander did have some quality control issues at that time. When a batch came in to Paxman, Douglas Moore used to test each horn for them and tell them which ones should be returned as being substandard. By the way, I neglected to mention that as far as my memory serves

The joke was always that the best ones stayed in Germany, the second best came to England and the rest went across the Atlantic. I'm sure it isn't true. I have had two Alex 103's and both have been superb. Three of my students currently have 103's and they too are excellent instruments.

The pre 1940s Alexanders were a different animal than the 50s and later ones. With the post war ones, the horn can be very strangely out of tune with itself and play tight if you use an American mouthpiece with it. An American shank mouthpiece won't fit far enough into the leadpipe
