Try it while rehearsing with an entire ensemble in an non-airconditioned
basement with a low ceiling and several ceiling fans going. The resulting
warbling from everyone will drive you bananas. It got a little better when we
turned off the one directly over us (the sound, not the heat).
I have a question on very old horns and lead pipes.
My husband owns several old trombones (1940 and older) that have had to have
the lead pipe replaced. When the pipes were removed, at best they looked like
swiss cheese, at worse they came out in pieces.
Can the same thing happen to the

I want to install a water key is a bit tricky to get to and is a natural water
trap, so I'm considering something a little smaller and easier to install than
the standard lever water key. I don't want my repair
If you want to really see all the variations of the tuba, this is the time of
year to do it. All across the country (and some parts of the world for that
matter) tubists will be getting together for Tubachristmas.

So that's how you do it. Wow, it works!

Simply try to hold the front part of your tongue against the roof of your
mouth with the right amount of light
I'm not sure instant glue would have worked in that
situation for me. Back then I tended to have a death
grip on my thumb valve. I've since learned to relax
my hand.

Unfortunately it happened on a Saturday evening and I

OK, so King used to use a mouthpiece receiver that
only really fit with their mouthpieces. What's the
best approach for dealing with this if you want to use
a different mouthpiece? Can the receiver be modified,
or does the leadpipe have to be replaced?
This is purely an amateurs opinion. I currently play
on a King Eroika that had the bell cut and the lacquer
stripped. I originally got it as a travel horn, but
started playing it more than my Abilene 8D because the
valves work so much better. Now, for one group I'm in,
it's my horn of choice.
I showed this thread to my husband. He is quite fond
of the Olds trombone line and owns several of the
Super trombones. He has done some research on the
Super line and had this to say:
It would be very interesting to examine, or at least
see a picture of, a pre-WWII Super Olds French horn.

There are indeed string bass parts in quite a few band
compositions. A lot of it is for affect. The piece
that comes to mind is Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas
Music. This fine work was written specifically for
symphonic band. There are several passages in it that
are covered only by the string
I recently bought a King 4 valve single b flat off
ebay, not to play seriously, but to have fun with.
When I play it alone in my living room it sounds
great; but, when I have tried it with an ensemble, the
intonation is all over the map. I mean, this little
horn is squirrelly!
I probably should

In about a week I'm going to have surgery on my lower
abdomen. The recovery time is estimated at about 5 to
6 weeks.
I know that even thinking of buzzing on a mouthpiece
will be out of the question for most of that period. I
would, however, like to try to maintain some of the

Hi Stephanie,
A large number of the High School Music teachers in
Orange County received their degree from either Cal
State Long Beach or Cal State Fullerton. I can't
recommend either one as I graduated as an Engineer
from Cal Poly SLO. The only knock (IMO) on Long Beach
or Fullerton is that
Maybe Long Beach still does have a marching band, (I
haven't really asked) but usually lack of football
will kill a marching band. When I went to the Big
West Tourney last year, Long Beach did have a very
large pep band (they rotated players, only 35 are
allowed to play in the stands at one
Well whatdayaknow! It works! At least for what I
needed to do, maintain the lips and work on technique.
I cut a slit in the bottle to let a little more air
escape.
I wouldn't want to use it long term (centering some
notes was a little wonky) but for the occasional week

I have maintained that a 1/2 liter bottled water
bottle works as well as any purchased practice mute,
at least for a medium bell horn.

Musi Chem is a company out of San Diego . I called
asking some uneducated questions about chemistry and
was politely given the proper explanations. I had been
using SpaceFiller which I found
one of my works to the mail
system and their care.
I have found their webpage and have read one review in
Yahoo travel, so I am fairly certain they are a
legitimate organization. I just need that last bit of
reassurance.

Back in college, on tour, someone did the usual slip
something inside the conductors score. The conductor
was a good sport and told us about it after the
concert. The something was inserted at a really
intense passage of Armenian Dances. He said that it
bothered him for the rest of the piece.
At least they wrote beside the note. I hope it was in
pencil.
One person in my section transposed some bass cleff
passages to treble cleff and TAPED! the transpositions
to the original part Fortunately, a little
careful surgery with a very sharp knife got it off
again.

Librarian,
Does anyone have a repair technician they trust in the
Los Angeles, Orange County area. At this point I'm
even willing to travel to San Diego for a good valve
person.
I sent my spare horn in for a cleaning and when I went
to pick it up one valve was way off from the timing

Aw come on. It's just not Christmas without Leroy

The problem with my band is that we either do all of
them or none at all.
Played Buglers Holiday with trombone trio once. That
was good. (course I'm biased, my husband was on the
3rd solo part)

There is one woman in my band who has yet to figure
out how to put together a folding stand. I keep
wondering how she can not figure it out, it's so
simple. She can't even tell which lever to pull to
raise the thing. GAH!! I'd hate to think how long
it took her to figure out which direction to
In my band, the surest way to get lost is to follow
the percussion. If they are not lost entirely, they
are usually behind the beat. Better to follow the
tubas. The only problem with following my conductor
is figuring out which of his beats is the downbeat.
They all look the same. Yes, I do
While waiting for the drummers to find their parts,
one band director mused:
It never ceases to amaze me. In an 8 measure rest,
the horn section will take their instruments
completely apart and somehow manage to get their horns
back together again in time to make a perfect
entrance.

I would love to be able to do that, particularly in a
