Years ago, silver plate was the common repair for rotary valves. If you
couldn't plate the rotors yourself, you sent them to a plater and requested a
hotel plate which was a triple plate. Then the repair person lapped them
into the casings. Many times, if they hadn't been prepared
Some years ago a man from Pennsylvania brought in a brand new Conn 8D to us.
It was pretty well banged up, particularly the bell and outer parts of the
horn. His story:
I just read the Farkas Art of the Horn where he demonstrates how to play
the horn while it is resting on a shelf. I
Dear Mr. Kampen and list,
I probably put a few years on Mr. Rubenstein. When it came time to play
the 2nd horn solo in the first movement of the Emperor Concerto, I went for
the written E flat and splattered it all over the place including the
remainder of the solo. Mr. Rubenstein just
When I was playing in Baltimore in the middle 70's, William Kendall and I
were called on to play the Schubert Unfinished Symphony. At rehearsal, Bill
missed a slur using the third valve a couple of times that should have been
easy. We went to our shop after rehearsal and talked this

Eldon,
Bill Kendall just called me with the news about Commissiona. I worked
with him for eight years and Kendall kept on for another long period. We both
enjoyed being in his orchestra after the first two years. It took us some
time to get the proper position in the orchestra, but
Hello Kendall,
Please give my congratulations to Bernhard. Persistance and talent really
pay off in the long run, don't they?

Just a memory -- but George McCracken built a horn similar to the one
pictured on EBay. Check with Phil Meyers and George McCracken. They were both
involved. Back in the 80's.

If the bell can be used to make an otherwise unuseable horn available for
present day use, IE: to make someone a living, use it. I played on a

I would imagine some orchestras use an assistant. I really don't remember
whether we did or not. The third horn can be used some of the time to help

score so can't answer your question. Have fun.
