Subject: [Hornlist] Re: Horn Supervisor.

Even though "The Holton Horn Supervisor" was working there in the late 70's,
the problems he was finding apparently were nothing new.

?

In my inexperienced youth and in the flush of a sudden increase in my teaching
salary,?I?acquired a supposedly new H 179 in 1973 that was a mass of problems
similar to the very ones he described being extant in his time there.? I had
tried out a?horn, and it was a certain improvement over my,?ah, hem,?Josef Lidl
(Yes, there really were reasonably sane appearing people out there who tried to
play them), and then ordered it a few weeks later to be shipped.? (Duh !? I
know)? The crooks at the?so called reputable music store in San Diego must have
thought they had died and gone to heaven and unloaded on me what I later
suspected may have been?a 1970 vintage?reject from their school music rentals
program.?(They knew about my?Lidl, so probably?thought, "he'll never notice,
heh, heh".) Well, even if I didn't (denial), everyone else in the local groups
did, including a conductor who was a personal friend of Mr Pascucci, and who
was pissed that I had not ordered it through him (so he c
ould get the commission?)?Live and Learn. Had to send it back to Holton
LeBlanc, yet after two months and?their saying that they had made it right, it
was still not right.? Several trips to shops over the next two decades and it
was okay, but still not quite right.? Eventually got stopped using it after I
found an old Elkhart 28 D, which today remains my main ax.?Perhaps Holton makes
very good instruments these days, but I shall never know since as far as I am
concerned the ten foot pole rule still applies.? Now, if Holton would like to
give a new H 105, my feelings won't be so hurt.

Irony, someone once said, is one of the higher forms of humor.

?

PS: I still have the Lidl.?It is for me like the weights baseball players put
on their bats when they warm up. ??Live and Learn, indeed.
