[Hornlist] Re/ R. Levin Mozart Cto.1 Reconstruction
Hello Fellow Horn Listers! I am trying to either purchase or borrow through Inter Library Loan through a University Music Library etc... a copy of Robert Levin's fine reconstruction and completion or Mozart Horn Concerto #1 K.412(K386b) as recorded by James Sommerville, but in an edition for Horn with Piano/Keyboard Accompaniement. I am studying and performing this work on my 2 recitals and truly want to use Levin's version. If anyone can lead me to a copy of this edition it would be most appreciated!!! Cheers, Benjamin Scott North Dakota State University Fargo, ND USA Benjamin, Can't you get that from the teacher at the University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople? [Hornlist] Going to Boston...
Hey guys and gals! I got the news that I'm going to be heading out to Boston for a business trip for a few days. I don't want to leave my horn at home and go 3-4 days without touching it. (She'll miss me and vice versa...) So, I'm flying in on Monday night, August 24th into Logan and will be staying in a hotel in Lexington and flying out on Thursday evening. The way I see it, I'll have Tuesday and Wednesday evenings free and on Thursday afternoon, I'm going to go check out Ken's shop and Osmun's shop. I'd love it if anyone here on the boards would either like to get together and play through some duets (or quartets if you can wrangle 3 players...) or if there's a community ensemble or a person missing from an orchestra rehearsal that I can sit in on. At the very least, I'll gladly treat to some of your favorite beers and/or Scotch at some of Boston's finest public houses (I think they have bars in Boston, right??) Cheers! [Hornlist] Confusing transposition (double post)
I apologize for double posting this, but I really need help. Who knows? There may be someone here who can answer me that's not on the other list. I've hesitated to ask this question for a long time because I'm not sure I can find the words to adequately explain what I mean. Well, here goes: This past spring, I played a Mendelsohn piece. (Sorry, can't even remember which one, something for Easter.) I was on 3rd horn. The 1st and 2nd horn players were transposing to one horn key, but I was transposing to a completely different horn key, I think a fifth higher or lower than they were. Anyway, the tonic of their horn key corresponded with the tonic of the whole orchestra. So when the first second horns played their written C, it was the tonic that matched what the whole orchestra played. But my tonic, my written C, was NOT the tonic of the rest of the orchestra. If I remember correctly my written C, was the dominate or the subdominate of the key the orchestra played. I wasn't very familiar with the piece, but before the rehearsal I wasn't really worried about it because it looked simple. I only played through it once or twice showed up to the first rehearsal thinking I was prepared. I was shocked that I could hardly play 50% of the notes correctly. Nothing felt correct. In my mind, I wanted MY tonic written C to correspond with the tonic of the whole orchestra, but it didn't work that way. It was horribly confusing and I just couldn't play it correctly on the fly, if you know what I mean. I had to go home transpose it to horn in F to make it work. Am I making any sense here? Have any of you had a similar experience? Is there a strategy I can employ to avoid that sort of disaster again? [Hornlist] Moosewood Magnum Opus Mouthpiece
Hello everyone, After noticing a new trend in mouthpiece design, several weeks ago I asked Bob Osmun to employ his CNC apparatus to cut grooves into a MegaMoosewood RBS underpart. The results were outstanding. Since then I asked Tom Greer about employing the same technique with his own designs and am finding a similar result with the result, which he has named the Magnum Opus. I find the hyperbole tied to Megamoose underparts concerning loud dynamics being easily managed and the ability to slot better without impacting the ease of slurring along with stability being faciliated are more closely embodied in the Magnum Opus design. Even better, the Magnum Opus is somewhat lighter than the Megamoose, and matches up well with lighter horns (like my CF Schmidts), so response is not affected so very much and there is no sense of overkill which I sometimes feel happens when I couple my horns up with the [too heavy] Megamoose series R series mouthpieces. According to Tom he is now making this style of mouthpiece in all his standard models and he is getting great results with a Vienna style cup on his Merker. Of course, we're still early in the game and I haven't performed on it that much over the summer (although I will be trialing the MO with a Brahms Trio performance next week), but it's such an easy mouthpiece to play on and I'm wondering what everyone else thinks; has anyone tried the Magnum Opus yet? P.S. I'm not a Moosewood employee, and don't stand to gain anything for this posting, even though it would be nice if Tom renames the RBS as the LSD and plates it in psychedelic patterns in honor of my initials and the 40th anniversay Woodstock anniversary on 8/15. P.P.S. For the New York tri state area audience, WLIW filmed a segment based on my experiences as a seven year old around the original Woodstock festival which will appear on 8/15 at 8:00pm, my segment should come up in the 10 oclock hour. It premiered last Wednesday and everyone agrees I've spoken to agrees is quite funny. Best regards to all, Louis Salvatore Denaro Click to compare refinance loan offers from national lenders. Hi Val, I guess I am also confused. So: What key was the 1st and 2nd in, and what key were you in??? I am not quite sure what you are asking.
