I side with Hans on this. People are blissfully unaware how difficult the  
Horn is (or any instrument) for that matter. So, they are blissfully unaware 
of  how difficult it is to play something consistently over and over again. 
Yet,  miss just once and they will never forget. It's sort of the opposite 
of getting  your palm read by someone, where you remember all the 'hits' - 
both of them -  and forget all the misses - hundreds of them.
 
Other instrumentalists are also sometimes blissfully unaware of what we  
deal with in horn playing - which is why I'm skeptical of any major audition  
that neglects to put someone from the section on the audition panel. 
 
But, it happens, and such is life.

o.k. no joking now. Think back two days. How was your feeling ? 
Did you notice something strange ? Did you grab for things but
fail to get them ? Did you notice a certain alertness ? Did you become 
upset by nearly everything ? Did you feel some dizziness ?

Exactly ! That is the "pre-quake-feeling". But it does not help
you to locate it in advance.

Steve, you are far away from reality. Audiences have a very short memory
for the very good things, but a long lasting memory for the accidents happen.

About the money:
question back to you, did you commit that many clams .? It would not be
an issue to surpass me regarding bank account because of clams.
You cannot become rich, playing at State Opera, even the salary is very fine,
comparable to public prosecutor or DA. Well, I made some extra bucks 
through soloing, my horn & music business, but much less you would
expect. I also spent a lot on travels with the family and on our travels
just in two.

And last: if I had made more clams just to get more bonusses, I would 
have lost my job.

The strongest impact of brass instruments could have been
made by the trumpets of Jericho, perhaps.

But there are other impacts like the beginning of Oberon. If played
perfectly ten times in a row or more often, nobody cares, but if you 
crack it, they will talk about it even in ten thousand years & tell you
that there was a unnamed player who did it right always but long time ago 
(quoting Emil Wipperich and Bruno Jaenicke), well, and the clam remains
cruising around in the hall for dozens of years.

Sorry to be slow to reply; I read the daily digest.  What you are asking for
exists and is called earthquake intensity.  It's defined by the Modified
Mercalli Scale and is written as Roman numerals from I to XII.  Intensity
reflects the level of observed damage and is not directly related to the
physics of the earthquake source.  The best case in point is the Haiti
earthquake last year.  That earthquake was almost 100 times smaller than the
Japan earthquake (magnitude 7 compared to magnitude 8.9) but resulted in
over 222,000 deaths.  This had more to do with the rampant poverty and
corruption in Haiti than it did with the location or size of the earthquake.

Now, how can we make this horn related?  Perhaps we could start a thread on
a scale for the quality of musical sound emanating from an instrument.
Would this be a quantitative measure of the sound production of the
instrument, or a qualitative judgment by a listener in the audience?  And
how does one account for the quality, or lack thereof, of the player and the
instrument?

That all depends, too. Katrina, when it  hit the MS Gulf Coast, was  
technically only a category 3. Yet, we  all saw the damage it did. 

Even hurricane categories don't always mean  a certain amount of damage  
since they can vary based on size, where  they hit, how they hit, etc.
Charley,  
for example, exploded at  the last minute and effected a very small area. 
Andrew,  when it hit,  moved very quickly and raked the entire portion of
south 
Florida.

Hurricane Categories are a very useful tool to understand   how big, how 
bad. Much more useful in figuring out what you need to send  than  current 
EQ

ratings. 

I know if it's a Category 4 or 5  hurricane, I'll  be pulling a lot of 12+ 
hour days. A Cat 1 or 2 on  the other hand means maybe  2 days of 24 hour
ops, 
just to make  sure the storm doesn't change her mind.  Then back to normal.

And Ike made landfall as a Category 2, however, the storm surge was more
like that of a Category 4 or 5.  I watched from afar as the Search and
Rescue Teams from Texas along with National Guard, Coast Guard and Active
Duty Helos pulled a lot of people to safety when it struck them that the
National Hurricane Center had missed the big threat.

But you are arguing apples versus oranges.  Hurricane scale is an indicator
of potential damage based mainly on wind speed and it effect on structures.
EQ intensity scales don't indicated similar things.

Then again you have to ask yourself is a hurricane a Geyer or Kruspe wrap?

Earthquake magnitude is determined from the amplitude of ground motion as
measured on a seismograph.  In principle, energy should be proportional to
amplitude squared, just as sound intensity is proportional to pressure
squared.  However, Richter noted that the energy released by an earthquake
does not simply scale up.  A larger earthquake ruptures a larger fault, over
a larger range of depths, and over a longer time duration.  So, in defining
the magnitude scale, Richter empirically related magnitude to energy
according to: log E = 11.4 + 1.5 M (for energy in ergs).  Thus, for every
increase in magnitude by 1 unit, energy increases by 10^(1.5), or a facor of
31.6.

And the more important difference between the two quakes in Christchurch was 
the location of the epicenter,
which was first about 15 - 25 kms outside town, but very near to town this time 
a month ago. 

When I was in Christchurch 2003 we stayed at the grey building (Heritage Hotel) 
you could see
next to the damaged tower of the cathedrale there. I was there playing Schumann 
op.86.

My friends live there. The historic part with the nice eateries, all gone.

It's about that much, yes. But, when dealing with these scales it would be  
difficult to pin down something more specific with extreme amounts of  
energy.
 
The Toba Eruption you speak of was 1 gigaton.
 
Believe it or not, the 1964 Alaskan earthquake was 90.7 gigatons.

the list with greater knowledge than I hold.

The earthquake scale (I believe the Richter Scale has been replaced) is a
weird beast.  As I understand it's a measurement at the point where
the actaul movement happens.  Consider what happened in Christchurch, New
Zealand.  The first earthquake several months ago, that did minimal damge
was a greater magnitude than the most recent one that did considerable
damage.  The difference between the two was the first EQ happened at a much
greater depth than the second.

simply because  it would require a fault larger than any on the planet. The 
largest earthquake  ever recorded on Earth was a magnitude 9.5 that occurred in 
Chile in 1960,  followed in size by the 1964 Good Friday earthquake in 
Alaska (magnitude 9.2), a  magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Alaska during 1957, and 
a 
magnitude 9.0 earthquake  in Russia during 1952. Two large earthquakes, one 
a magnitude 9.0 and one a  magnitude 8.2, occurred on Dec. 26, 2004 and 
March 28, 2005, respectively, along  the same fault zone off the coast of

The energy release of an earthquake, which closely correlates to its

But in Japan there was a 7.2 quake two days ago, three shocks yesterday & 42 
shocks today between 05:46 A.M. & 01:49 P.M. local Munich time, means 02:46 
P.M. and 11:46 P.M. in Tokyo.

But news did not talk about yesterdays heavy quake in Yuennan SW China with 25 
dead & over 250 injured, but CCTV9 broadcasted the Japan disaster for several 
hours in their English program.

Somebody out there to explain the above calculation in simplified words, please 
?

Japan is certainly no stranger to major Earthquakes, but this one is the  
largest Japan or the surrounding area has ever recorded I think. 
 
The Northridge Quake, although 'only' at a 6.7, had one of the fastest  
ground accelerations ever recorded - at 1.7 Gs. 
 
As you can see from here, quakes of magnitude 8.5 or higher are very rare  
indeed:
