Yes, that was my original intent with the question. I should've been more specific though, especially as I'm primarily interested in works by composers who are still living. Part of the confusion in this thread concerns what is meant by "modern". While it may be that _most_ brass quintet music has been written in recent times, a large portion of it is arrangements of much older music. That would be 'Outings.' ...I was at the premier! It was a long time ago, and now my memory of that concert and even who played it is foggy. It was either at Tanglewood or in London. We play it in our faculty quintet. It's kind of a quirky piece, but has its merits. I can't resist joining the parade. I too have a nifty brass quintet. It is in four short movements with a total duration of just under 15 minutes. You can hear it via the internet. Go to Classical.net, search for Lamb. There you will see information about my six CDs. Scroll down to #9 on their menu to read the liner notes for "Late Harvest." Then scroll down to #15 to hear mp3s of the whole piece. The title is "Halcyon Summer." There is also a three movement piece for brass quintet and organ. There's a quintet by Verne Reynolds that was commissioned by the Wisconsin Brass Quintet in 1987, that has only recently been published. Hi Steve, There's incredible music out there. Let's start with the Alvin Etler bq. Amazing. Also the bq by Ira Taxin. Meridian Arts Ensemble (that's my group) commissioned a piece from Tom Pierson which is really heavy emotionally, and VERY slow, with a big impact. There's a really nice piece called Take Five, by Jan Radzynski. Of course the Lutoslawski Mini Overture, which is short but amazing. That's just a short list. Conveniently (here comes an act of shameless commerce), MAE has recorded all these pieces and more. Check out www.meridianartsensemble.com. By the way, all the pieces I mentioned except maybe the Pierson go over pretty well with "the general audience." The Pierson is a stretch, but worth it. My quintet last year played Jacob Druckman's Dance with Shadows, and we really enjoyed it - once we got it put together. It is a fairly challenging work, but well worth it, and we got a great audience reaction every time.
