There are a few compensating horns marked on this site: http://www.horn-u-copia.net/display.php?selby=where%20instrument="French%20Horn"; I don't know whether the pictures are detailed enough for your purposes, but they generally show both the front and back of the horn so you can see the little slides. [Hornlist] Pictures of compensating horns
I would appreciate links to pictures of compensating double (or triple) French Horns - someone asked me about how this works, and I believe I explained correctly but, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. In particular, something that clearly shows the little extra sections for the valve slides when the horn is played in F, as that is the most unique part of the way the things works in my mind. Thanks in advance, and feel free to reply on- or off-list as you wish. I poked around on the Internet for a while and couldn't find even one good picture, but I suspect some may be at web sites in languages other than my own. -S- ___ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

The artist was Viktor Hartmann, an architect and friend of Moussorgsky. Images can be found on the web at various spots, including: http://www.emboscados.com/foro/viewtopic.php?TopicID=2413 http://www.russisches-musikarchiv.de/bilder.htm The resolution isn't high and I don't know how projectable they can be. RE: [Hornlist] Pictures
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictures_at_an_Exhibition As the pictorial basis for his musical exhibition, Mussorgsky mostly selected drawings and watercolours that Hartmann had produced during his travels abroad. Sadly, we cannot in all cases be certain which Hartmann work Mussorgsky was alluding to, because not all the paintings and drawings have survived. In an article in The Musical Quarterly in 1939, Alfred Frankenstein claimed to have identified seven pictures by catalogue number of the eleven: Two Jews: Rich, and Poor (two separate drawings became the source of Samuel Goldenberg und Schmuyle), Gnomus, Tuileries (now lost), Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks, Samuel Goldenberg und Schmuyle, Catacombae, The Hut on Hen’s Legs (Baba Yaga), and The Bogatyr Gates. -S- > -Original Message- > From: Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2008 3:40 PM > To: The Horn List > Subject: Re: [Hornlist] Pictures > > Without doing the process again: > > I have seen reproductions of these paintings on several web > pages. Regardless, the only explanation for this indication that I can come up with is indicating a new notation reading of the bass clef. That, or there was some confusion at the time about sounding pitches of stopped tones, and Ravel wanted to indicate that the B-flat should be the tone that sounds (not the tone that is fingered). I second that, Paul !!! Reminds me of Igor Markevich, who screemed "cuivre, cuivre " & we blew as brassy as possible & he shouted again "Hrns, CUIVRE, CUIVRE !", so I asked him to explain to us what he wanted with "cuivre". His reply: "STOPPING". So you can see, how we suffer under some of these idiots.
