Sorry. Long distance analysis just doesn't work for me.

It may even be that the oil is not the actual problem. Is it possible
that the weather is causing this? We have extreme humidity at the
moment and the horn is in and out of airconditioning all the time
(although cooler the air still seems to stay very clammy).

I would really appreciate any ideas or advice! Thankyou :)

A thicker oil would not do any lasting harm. It can always be flushed out
if it slows down the action too much. On my horns I use Singer Sewing
Machine Oil for the bearings and Bue Juice for the lateral surfaces of the
valves.

Thankyou for your advice, I have manipulated every movable part of the horn and
all seems tight and sound. I have checked all strings, screws and fittings and
they seem equally OK. In fact for a possibly elderly instrument that has
travelled around the countryside quite a deal it seems to me to be in pretty
good shape all round!

I'm going to try a change of oil (also perhaps get something a little thicker
as the valves may not be quite so snug anymore -is this a good idea?) and I
can't help wondering about the weather aspect as it has been quite extreme
recently. Maybe it will even resolve itself with a change of season in a few
weeks time!

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean... maybe I'll have a talk to the brass
repairman (even though he very seldom works on horns, mostly brass band
instruments, he should hopefully know what to look for)

Well, this horn seems to have passed some years. Look at the
linkage, if there is some "mobility" at the connections of
the arms, where metal "clonks" metal, perhaps. If you hold
both arms & they seem to allow a bit of movement at the
connections, bring the horn to a repairman to get it fixed.
What kind of linkage does it have ? Is it a cross-joint ?
(mostly) This can be fixed.

Thankyou, I did check the linkage and it seemed OK although
I wasn't 100% certain to know what to look for. There is a
brass repairman in town so perhaps I'll ask him to take a
look too.

My horn is a Gerhard Schneider B&H sponsored Master Model. I
don't know how old it is, it only has 131205M stamped on the
leadpipe but no other markings. I suspect it has been around
for a while but it is a bit of a mystery instrument! You
were actually the only person able to provide me with any
information on G. Schneider a year or so ago.

Thankyou again for your suggestions. As it is my only
instrument (and the only one I'm ever likely to have) and I
value it dearly I want to take the best care of it that I
can.

Have a Happy Easter break!

As Loren said, a good repair person might help. But as you
said, the valves are getting noisy, you should consider
checking the valve linkage first, as here wear appears

Thankyou for your very fast reply! As soon as you mentioned about the Al Cass I
realised that this was the first time in ages that I'd bought and used it (and
then only because the shop had run out of my usual Yamaha oil) and I also
remember someone making the exact same comment once before (I have a terrible
sieve-like memory) ...Now what was I saying again...?

I don't play a Yamaha (any more) but an old Alex.-clone. I buy Yamaha because
it is the only oil available locally but do you think it would be wiser to
order in something else? I certainly won't use the Al Cass anymore (and will be
interested to see if that makes a difference!)

Thanks again! I love this list :)

2006-04-13 Thread Loren Mayhew
A competent repair person may need to look at your problem. The Yamaha
valves are tapered and difficult to seat properly except by someone with
expertise with these valves. They may have worn or have been cleaned and not
seated properly causing them to be noisy.
I would also recommend not using Al Cass; use Blue Juice or Hetman #11 or
12 Rotor oil instead. Al Cass tends to make rotors sticky which could be
another source of frustration (and possibly noise).
