Hello Klaus, as the Missa was written after 1796, horns (or crooks) in Bb-basso (I owned just one from mid 19th cen.) or a coupler to be used with C-basso crook was possible. But Haydn liked the horn sound & the trumpet sound & often used them to play< uniso, to give the horns a more silvery sound & to soften the trumpets. This mixed sound was his ideal obviously, a sound one might not listen too very often today. As for all works of this particular time, the horns must be played very light, no heavy sound, no pounding ! Too often we can hear horns sound like oven pipes or like castrated alto-trombones today. Not a normal pattern, but then Bb (and rarily C) are the only keys which in the classical repertory may cause doubt whether up or down. The Bb alto reading takes reasonably secure players.
