[HOT] Malaria Campaign Updates

2017-04-27 Thread Russell Deffner
Greetings everyone,

It has been an incredible collective effort to conduct this massive mapping
campaign to help end malaria. If you have not seen it yet, check out
Mapbox's blog and graphics of the work done so far:
https://www.mapbox.com/blog/world-malaria-day/

On Tuesday, World Malaria Day, about 360 mappers came together for this
campaign and ended up tracing over 94,000 buildings in Zimbabwe. I can't say
"Wow, Thank You!" enough.

Although World Malaria Day is over, the disease is not, and neither is the
mapping. Please continue to spread the word and share the link directly to
the campaign on the Tasking Manager: http://bit.ly/2miQUyZ - or for more
information, the project page:
https://www.hotosm.org/projects/malaria_elimination_campaign

For the youthmappers chapters, there will be one more round of the Mapping
To End Malaria Challenge which will run May 1 - June 4; more info and
registration can be found here:
https://www.hotosm.org/updates/2017-03-06_malaria_mapping_youthmappers_chall
enge

For those chapters currently competing in round 2, I just looked at
preliminary stats and there is literally a one(1) building difference
between two contenders; with several others on their heels for 2nd and 3rd
place. A good push this weekend could really make the difference for a
handful of teams.

Thank you everyone for supporting this campaign and Happy Mapping!

=Russ

[HOT] Walk through of using Mapillary for advanced road editing

2017-04-27 Thread Blake Girardot HOT/OSM
Dear Friends,

I saw someone posted this link to a Mapillary community outreach
person's OSM Diary entry about using Mapillary for advanced road
mapping.

As you may know, Mapillary is one of the companies that support OSM
and HOT both.

They recently launched their Humanitarian Mapping Kit to make the
skills, tools and training more available in more places.

https://www.hotosm.org/updates/2016-07-27_introducing_the_mapillary_humanitarian_mapping_kit_in_partnership_with_hot

But, they also help by providing documentation and this OSM Diary
entry is great guidance and information about one of the ways
Mapillary's tools can be used in humanitarian work.

It is not in a typical humanitarian context, but it is exactly one of
the several ways local communities can and do use Mapillary after they
have been out doing field work to create detail and increased
usefulness in the map we can't get from remote imagery.

http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/NunoCaldeira/diary/40963

If learning how to do this kind of advanced mapping and field data
collection interests you, checkout mapillary.

Cheers,
Blake

Sorry again. I pulled the challenge and recreated a new one without the
cases where the "spike" had zero-length. That was understandably confusing.

New link is at http://maproulette.org/map/2500.

Info is still at http://area.jochentopf.com/fixing.html#spikes-buildings .

Sorry, that was the wrong URL. The correct one is:

Re: [HOT] Broken (multi)polygon cleanup

2017-04-27 Thread Michael Heißmeier

Hi Donal,

Donal Hunt, 2017-04-27 16:26:
Re: http://area.jochentopf.com/fixing.html#spikes-buildings

I looked at one of the issues flagged (e.g.
http://maproulette.org/map/2498/2186222) and don't really understand what the
"spike" problem is. Are there examples of how to identify the issue? Are these
issues only fixable in JOSM or can one use ID?

According to Jochen's description on the webpage a spike is a line which returns
in itself. In the case you are asking for this line has zero length. There are
three nodes in the way for this house which are at the same position. This can
be visualized in JOSM using its built-in validator which detects duplicate nodes:

The house in the upper left of these nodes has the additional problem that it
contains one of the twice, hence the zero-length spike:

I don't think that you can detect something like this in iD. But you can clearly
see the ones with non-vanishing spikes (like
http://maproulette.org/map/2499/2187301) in iD.

If you use iD my suggestion is to skip those without visible spikes and leave
them to JOSM users.

Best Regards

Re: [HOT] Broken (multi)polygon cleanup

2017-04-27 Thread Jochen Topf
Hi!

I just posted a new Maproulette challenge for fixing one particular case
of broken polygons: Building ways with "spikes". Details are at
http://area.jochentopf.com/fixing.html#spikes-buildings .

Because there is a large number of those in HOT areas, I have split
those off into their own challenge
(http://maproulette.org/ui/admin/list/379/Challenge/tasks/2499).
Would be great to get some help fixing those from the HOT community.

Jochen
