Thanks for your questions, in meantime I did some further cleaning and
re-booted the computer.
The problem seems to have vanished so I cannot reproduce the failure to
start.
I use macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6 and I downloaded the latest
version of Hugin 3 days ago so version 2019.0.0.

The icon on the dock does not work at all. Hence I use the app folder
and start Hugin from the folder with the Hugin app:
It will then display the following text box:
If I choose OK the program will stop.
