Thank you very much. I am a newbie so please excuse me if the following is meaningless: is there any way to "automate" the circle image marking after first instance, i.e. saving somehow the procedure and/or by way of a script?

Hugin can't automatically detect the empty black areas outside the image circle, so you need to select a 'circular fisheye' lens and manually mark the circle in the crop tab. Hugin will calculate all the other lens parameters for you. Though I recommend initially stitching a panorama with more
