Thanks. Indeed compiling from source was the answer (as always).

I used to see that in Hugin 2022 on Debian Bookworm whenever I clicked in
an image when manually creating control points. Someone on the list said
that Debian had compiled a lib Hugin used as a debug version.

Isn't there a way to instead add the /media root directory so that I could keep
my file paths identical to my system ?

You can use bind mounts to get the hard drive mounted into your home dir. Then
the flatpak should be able to access it.

I was looking at the output and I think (in my untrained view) it is trying
to open an image or something but because there is no image it crashes:
/usr/share/hugin/data/plugins/shooting_pattern.py
CAT:initial distribution
NAM:6-1-1 Shooting Pattern

didn't do anything. I still crash on start. Let's see what happens when I
start it from a terminal:
$ hugin
(hugin:21422): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_set_size_request: assertion

(hugin:21422): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_set_size_request: assertion

it looks as if my understanding of it was backwards. Thank you so much for
your wise advice! Let's do the RC and see what happens!

If you do an installation from source, I'd highly recommend that.

I then realized there is NO ppa.
bmike1@MikesBeast ~/Documents/Programs $ cd hugin-2016.2.0
bmike1@MikesBeast ~/Documents/Programs/hugin-2016.2.0 $ mkdir mybuild
bmike1@MikesBeast ~/Documents/Programs/hugin-2016.2.0 $ $ cd mybuild
$: command not found
bmike1@MikesBeast
After a little googling it appears there is no ppa for it. So before I
install it do I need to do anything with the existing ppa?

The funny thing about this is that I had just successfully completed a
panorama and I was just beginning another when it started dying.
