(slightly off topic; suggestions as to more appropriate forums
for general multi-image digital post processing welcome)

In my joy at finding new things to do with my digital camera...

I want to try to capture a "perfect" sunrise video.

This is known to be difficult/interesting.

I think (cocky) I can do better.

My approach is simple in concept.

Capture the data using a calibrated camera, and make all exposure decisions in
post processing.

So; Use a CHDK intervalometer to capture 5 exposure HDR exposures
using aperture priority, around 1 2/3 EV apart.

This is intended to capture all available "pixels" at any stage of the
sunrise. These will (clearly) NOT make a nice video.

However, by using (something like) pfstools,
I can calibrate the camera, so that each such exposure
is a "proper" image in HDR space (e.g. as an EXR file).

At this point in the modelling, I believe I will have fully captured
a record of the sunrise. I now need to retro-spectively make
a HDR tonemapping decision to generate the video.

There are two things to address here; each shot may
have more DR than the LDR video can manage, so some degree
of "normal" HDR processing may be needed (or I could just "clamp" it,
like a camera does).

But I will also need to have an overall "ramp" to compensate
for the gradual DR of the rising sun. Clearly, to get the video
to look "right", the video will be to brighten, but since
an LDR video does not have the DR of a sunrise, the
tone mapping will need to "moderate" the real DR.

So my post processing will consist of some kind of single-image HDR,
modulated by an overall ramp.

Questions: I cannot find any simple tone range tools in the PFSTOOLs
library - only exotic ones. (The sort of tools I need are the ones
in pfsview, only for the command line)

More generally - where is the best forum/group/list to discuss this sort of
thing?
