Fair warning -- I have some changes coming w.r.t. the configure/build system to
better accommodate embedding.
I tried earlier today to embed hwloc in Open MPI and basically failed. I've
successfully embedded hwloc in two other projects, and each time I've updated
the embedding code in hwloc to

I see the compile/link flags for it, but no specific code anywhere -- am I
missing it? (or does linking against the Kerrighed override some of the
"normal" POSIX-ish functions?)

Disregard -- upgrading to libxml2-2.7.7 on my mac fixed it (I did a port
upgrade of something else today; my ports tree may have been inconsistent).
All tests are passing now.

Ah, I see the problem -- I upgraded to 1.6.3 as part of the "wtf?" process to
try to fix the problem, but I was still seeing badness. But that's because of
hwloc's configure:
