Start with the classroom teachers. Convince them that this will make their
jobs easier and that their students may score better on their Standardized
Tests and that it is totally free, easy to integrate into the curriculum,
and fun for the students and you will have a "winner."

Is constructionist education and thus Sugar inherently ill suited to
existing typical school curricula and boosting standardized testing scores,
because the learning outcomes are individualized?

Re: [IAEP] [Systems] Maintenance downtime today for OS upgrades

2016-07-09 Thread Samuel Cantero
Hi all,

We had some issues with the docker upgrade, mainly with the btrfs fs. I had
to remove all of the btrfs subvolumes. I had to recreate every container
again (which is not a problem).

bugs.sl.o and bundlebin.sl.o are running again, but I could not find the
container for socialhelp.sl.o. All the active containers should be in
/containers pointing the git repo in /srv/containers. I've checked the
nginx config file for socialhelp.sl.o and it says that it should be running
on port localhost:8002 (proxypass), but there isn't a container.yml file
with that port. Have we removed this service?

Best regards,

Samuel C.

We finished upgrading sunjammer and freedom to Ubuntu 16.04 and we're
currently working on restoring services and post-upgrade cleanups.

Most notably, activities.sugarlabs.org is still down. It probably
doesn't like PHP 7... The wiki is also very slow because I had to
disable APC until I understand how to make Mediawiki use the new APCu.

Samuel is currently restoring docker images, and meanwhile I'm upgrading
freedom.

While Laura proposed to prioritize these in the context of promoting
Sugar on the broader US community, I offer that the experience of
localizing Sugar for these groups is a goal in itself, as a learning
experience for further work. As the article explains, there is /wisdom/
/embedded /in the words of the languages //of peoples who have lived in
these territories for thousands of years. This is part of humanity's
legacy and should not be lost.

I do believe the mere possibility fluency in technology and properly
appropriable informatics has the power to empower native cultures to
better cope with modernity and even assume leadership in it.

Perhaps we can learn from them how to exist under a dominant culture
(proprietary software).
The dominant culture has everyone engulfed in a /dreamspell/ that makes
it hard to see what is important.

That said, for sure, Sugarizer should be part of what gets translated
when we discuss translating Sugar.

Does anyone in these lists have contact with native north-american
people? Have we heard from the Mexican language efforts? I would ping
some contacts for US based natives if there could be support for
achieving this.

Regards,
Sebastian

Re: [IAEP] #Documentation SL Funding Committe

2016-07-09 Thread Caryl Bigenho
Sugarizer is the best way to get Sugar into classrooms in the USA. No cost for
the devices... The kids already have them. Start small with a mini "Sugarizer
For Schools." Have great documentation and easy to use, fail-safe, lesson plans
available free online. Present and demo at teachers conferences. Lots of
teachers conferences. Do the same at Linux Fests all over the country.

I could (and probably should) expand on this... Such as... Maybe start with one
subject area (eg Math). Use Master teachers like Rosamel in Uruguay to help...

I offer the suggestion that if someone is there with a laptop and wifi or
an Android phone, they can open a Google Hangout on Air and post the link
on the list :)
