Diagenetic processes in carbonate reservoirs often results in a fabric destructive, multi-scale, self-organized pore system (i.e. non-matrix karst) that leads to extreme permeability (up to several orders of magnitude higher than the surrounding matrix) and preferential pathways for fluid flow. Non-matrix karst can have a significant impact in hydrocarbon bearing carbonate reservoirs on in-place volumes, recovery factor, and reservoir performance. Historical field data and recent modeling work has demonstrated how failure to recognize the presence of karst in a reservoir and represent it in geologic and simulation model can lead to significant underestimation of in-place resources, poor reservoir management and low hydrocarbon recovery. Many giant carbonate fields, such as Tengiz & Kashagan in Kazakhstan, Malampaya in Phillipines and Luconia in Malaysia show evidence of non-matrix in both dynamic and static datasets. Similarly to these fields, Banyu Urip field has non matrix karst feature. The latter being the main topic of this talk.
