China oil and gas group CNOOC Ltd. is considering a $13 billion takeover of Unocal Corp., the Financial Times reports.
The report cites people close to the deal. It would be the largest overseas acquisition by a Chinese company. The government-controlled company is interested in Unocal's Asian units and is studying a takeover of the whole company, the report states.
Talks still have not taken place between the two companies. CNOOC also is looking at other overseas companies as well.
Unocal (NYSE: UCL) of El Segundo employs approximately 6,700 people. The company reported earnings of $180 million for fiscal year 2003.
If CNOOC bought Unocal, it would dramatically increase its oil-production capabilities. Unocal has proved reserves of 6.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 675 million barrels of crude oil and condensate. CNOOC also would be able to get funding for the purchase from stare-owned China Oil Offshore Corp., the report states.
Incorporated in Hong Kong in Aug. 1999, CNOOC Limited (NYSE: CEO) is the dominant producer of crude oil and natural gas offshore China. It is also one of the largest independent crude oil and gas exploration and production companies in the world. It employs nearly 2,500 people.
