I just finished writing a new semi-technical paper, "Creating Modern Business Computer Applications on z/OS". (The subtitle is: "It's Not Rocket Science, But It's Not Easy".)
This paper is an attempt to point out how even fundamental products (ISPF, Assembler, COBOL, and more) have changed and why an organization needs to upgrade the skills of their people. "I don't need to train my people in that: they already know it," is simply no longer true. The motivation for an organization is to be able to create quality, modern applications on z/OS, because there is payback to the bottom line for doing so. Part of my personal motivation for writing this is we came across an organization (a medium sized insurance company based in the US Midwest) who told us, "We don't need training: we haven't changed the way we operate in 30 years." I was stunned. So this is perhaps an alternative to an airplane magazine article. This paper... * takes a brief look at some of the latest kinds of applications you can run on z/OS today * discusses the characteristics of a business computer application * looks at the skills needed by developers to be able to create modern business computer applications * talks briefly about some ways to get those skills to developers Hope you find it intriguing / useful.
