Can someone point me towards a 'master' list of discussion groups, if indeed something like this exists. I'm going to check bama.ua.edu for others but I have to think others exist out there beyond the bama site. Looking for sites along the lines of IBM-MAIN but perhaps a bit more specialized

Do you have specific areas you are interested in? There are newsgroups for just about everything mainframe or distributed. IBM Main is a fairly broad area of interests and covers the elements you are looking for (BCPii, HMC, etc..). I am not currently aware of specific newsgroups for those
