I was Greg's Lab partner in 1981/1982 when we were new hires, taking system programmer education classes. He probably could have taught the class!
Greg was always helpful, funny, and as we all probably know, a little quirky! When we asked him how he had already amassed such a broad understanding of the operating system, he said, "I learned in the school of dumps!"
