Health Checker and SMF

2015-01-26 Thread Elardus Engelbrecht
Hi to all,

Now checking my Health Checker again ( and again! ) on z/OS v1.13, I see no SMF
Health checks.

After reading 2.1 books in below URL, I'm convinced this is by design.

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSLTBW_2.1.0/com.ibm.zos.v2r1.e0zl100/checks.htm

Am I correct or did we missed something?

Which brings me to a question:

Is there a need to write out SMF records for checks performed? (Not counting
accesses using these RACF class XFACILIT, profiles HZS.**)

TIA.

There should be no impact to code that uses the documented APIs to find UCBs.

PFA_SMF_ARRIVAL_RATE, but that's a PFA thing, of course.

Interesting. Should look if we have that PFA thing.

Health Checker records the results of the checks run in either its HZSPDATA
file or in a log stream if you want historical information, so I'm not sure
what cutting SMF records would add for you.

I think I should have added that I want Health Checker to check for SMF
recommended options, record selections, interval and so on.

Say, is 30 minutes interval is good/bad/ugly?
Or not collecting SMF records 30 or 80 at all is a real bad thing.
Or you have only ONE MANx dataset and so on.

Something like that above - highligthing non-recommended options used or made
active.

Thanks Anthony for your kind reply.

Subject: Health Checker and SMF

TIA.

So I guess we can assume that you are supposed to inflate the ball to the point
where it bursts, then go back in time to the point just before the bursting and
you have an inflated ball?

 Subject: zOS 2.1 JCL Symbol Services

 I wrote a small assembler program to try the JCL Symbol Services macro
 (IEFSJSYM) but am not having any success at getting any symbol values
 returned to my program.
 R15 is zero after the macro, and the eye-catcher is correct in the
output
 area, but sydEntryCount is always zero.

 I have a very simple test case with
 // EXPORT SYMLIST=*
 //SET VAR1=200
 //SET VAR='Hello World'
 // EXEC ASMACLG,...

 larl  r2,symbolList
 lar3,symbolArea
 lar4,diagData
 iefsjsym request=getbyname,diagdata=(r4), +
   symlistarray=(r2),numentries==y(symbolList#),   +
   symbarea=(r3),symbarealen==a(l'symbolArea), +
   mf=(e,iefsjsym_l,complete)

 I use GETBYNAME, but have not tried the GETALL.I also tried wildcard
names
 in my symbol list.

 If I can get GETBYNAME working the way I want, I plan to use that to
pass
 run-time options to the program instead of parsing a PARM=/PARMDD
string.

 Thanks for any suggestions...

“IBM does not comment on rumors, even ridiculous or baseless ones,”
the spokesman said. “If anyone had checked information readily

they would know that IBM has already announced the company has just
taken a $600 million charge for workforce rebalancing. This equates to
several thousand people, a small fraction of what’s been reported.”

The spokesman added that the company currently has job openings as
part of the rebalancing process.

“Last year, IBM hired 45,000 people, and the company currently has
about 15,000 job openings around the world for new skills in growth
areas such as cloud, analytics, security, and social and mobile
