First, I'm impressed that your subject line has 'DFSMShsm' as opposed to DFHSM
or any of the other names that it's gone by over the years.

Background on the design for selecting the data set backup target tier, first
created when physical tape was still dominant - for small data sets, you don't
want the overhead of a tape mount for a one-off backup, and for large data sets
you don't want them going to disk and eating up all of your space. So, we
created a SETSYS called DSBACKUP where you could fine tune just which data set
backups go to disk and which go to tape and the tasking level for each. With
virtual tape, this is no longer quite an issue, but the parameters still
persist. If you always want you individual backup copies to go to disk, you
can set the parameters to do so.

In the DFSMShsm Storage Administration manual SETSYS chapter, there is a
section names 'SETSYS fast-path for DFSMShsm Functions'. In this section you
will find a table with the parameters that affect tape processing. But, Chapter
10 of the DFSMShsm Implementation & Customization Guide is an exhaustive guide
for establishing the DFSMShsm tape environment.

I can spell HSM and am learning more about it - I have these questions that I
haven't found the answer to in the pubs (yet).

1. How can I change the default unit for HBACKDS datasets from tape to
disk?

SETSYS BACKUP(DASD) (might also need SETSYS UNITNAME. Check the fine manual).

2. I have 2 virtual tape libraries - how do I force HSM to only use the
tapes in one of them (it is currently using the 1st libraries tapes)?

There are a number of approaches here.
1) ETM volume pooling
2) esoteric unit name (in conjunction w/DFHSM SETSYS USERUNITTABLE)

HTH,

Thank you - answers would be ideal (and then I can move on to other
projects) or a pointer to pub/chapter would also be appreciated.

It's been a long time since I was spaceman...

Do recall that I used to direct HSMBACKUPS to the correct Library (I did my

link the (tape) storgrp to the correct set of volumes/ATL and presto

When standing up HSM you should have an ARCCMDxx member that has a lot of
that information in it.

Then there is the SETSYS command to change some things on the fly.

The Redbook on HSM PRIMER could be helpful

Re: Silly DFSMShsm questions

2019-07-30 Thread Glenn Wilcock
If it happens again, open a pmr. ISPF uses device type to determine if
MIGRAT'x' corresponds to ML'1', ML'2' or ML'C'. Since you are seeing a 'C',
but have never targeted 'C'loud object storage, there could be a defect in
which the device type is not being set appropriately. Thx.

One last thought. It would have been interesting to see what the device type
was in the catalog entries. This is what is used by ISPF 3.4 to determine
whether a migrated data set is MIGRAT1, MIGRAT2 or MIGRATC.

Hi,

Is there a chance that someone has tried out the Cloud support in HSM? MIGRATC
would normally indicate that a data set has been migrated to a cloud platform
of some kind.

Hi Listers,

Low priority, curiosity, silly question for you. How does one get a migrate
status of MIGRATC? I was doing some cleanup for a developer on Friday and
stumbled across 2 catalog entries for datasets that were in MIGRATC status. We
don't do anything with the cloud and so have never set up anything like this.
I hadn't even ever seen MIGRATC before. I was able to delete them by simply
using "d" in ISPF 3.4 but am pondering where these may have come from. Any
ideas?

This does qualify as a Friday type question because I found the datasets on
Friday.

Thanks,

Rex
