Re: Email Providers

2021-01-29 Thread Seymour J Metz
The PLESK web site doesn't seem to say whether the filtering is done in the
SMTP session or after the fact. What I'm looking for is a 5xx response for
anything flagged as spam, so that legitimate senders know that there is an
issue and can contact me via alternate channels. From my perspective,
quarantining spam negates the benefits of filtering. Also, I couldn't find
anything on the web site about whether the end user can configure in-session
filtering for his mailbox, much less whether I can tailor 5xx responses for
specific CIDR blocks and spcific domains.

Do I use a promo code for registering metsch.family?

Thanks.

Of course -- over 90% of the mail we get is spam.. We have to filter it.

Are you aware of PLESK's configuration options? They are the same. We

Re: Email Providers

2021-01-28 Thread Seymour J Metz
Yes, tagged addresses can be very useful, both for filtering into task-specific
inboxes and for detecting when a vendor is selling your addresses to spammers.
While the use of "+" for this purpose is most common, some providers use "-"
and less common characters, e.g., "{". Be aware that there are some brain-dead
web sites that "validate" e-mail addresses, ivariably written by people who
have never read RFC 5321 or 5322 and reject valid addresses.

Even if your provider doesn't support tagged addresses, some e-mail clients let
you filter on arbitrary header fields,

With Gmail you can use task-specific e-mail addresses that route to your
common inbox. Let's suppose for example your Gmail address is
ban...@gmail.com. You could subscribe to IBM-MAIN using this e-mail
address:

banana+ibmm...@gmail.com

and that'll route to the same inbox, but you can generally use your e-mail
client to sort based on the incoming e-mail address. Just add a plus sign

2021-01-26 Thread Seymour J Metz
The IBM-MAIN -> Usenet gating is one way; if you want replies to be visible on
the list, you must post to the list, not to the news group.

Does panix reject suspected spam, drop it silently or route it to a spam
folder? Does panix use procmail during the SMTP session, or only after it's
already accepted the e-mail?

I am happy with panix.com, but it costs $100/year. Mail can be accessed via
shell account, IMAP, and POP3. There's also a fairly complete set of USENET
groups, including the USENET copies of IBM-MAIN and other longstanding
mailing lists.

You can opt for spam filtering of varying aggressiveness, or none, and use
procmail to do your own filtering.

Lots more, if you need it.

I just use filters to assign one of several labels. Used to do that

I switched.

Re: Email Providers

2021-01-25 Thread Timothy Sipples
With Gmail you can use task-specific e-mail addresses that route to your
common inbox. Let's suppose for example your Gmail address is
ban...@gmail.com. You could subscribe to IBM-MAIN using this e-mail
address:

banana+ibmm...@gmail.com

and that'll route to the same inbox, but you can generally use your e-mail
client to sort based on the incoming e-mail address. Just add a plus sign
(+) plus any tag you want.

Here are some lesser known but possibly interesting free e-mail providers
in no particular order:

1. Vivaldi.net
https://webmail.vivaldi.net
Mail client setup details:
https://help.vivaldi.com/services/webmail/setting-up-vivaldi-mail-in-a-mail-client/
5 GB mailbox limit, supports TLS-encrypted IMAP, POP3, and SMTP

2. Apple iCloud Mail
https://www.icloud.com
Mail client setup details: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202304
5 GB limit, supports TLS-encrypted IMAP and SMTP
You might need an Apple device on hand at some point, but for day to day
use you don't.

3. Yahoo Japan Mail
https://mail.yahoo.co.jp
Mail client setup details:
https://getmailspring.com/setup/access-yahoo-co-jp-via-imap-smtp
10 GB limit, supports TLS-encrypted IMAP and SMTP
Yahoo Japan is a separate company that's not Verizon owned and operated.
User interfaces are exclusively in Japanese as far as I know, but that
doesn't matter much if you're using your own e-mail client and assuming
you get past registration.

4. Mail.ee
https://www.mail.ee
Mail client setup details: https://help.mail.ee/category/37/question/521
20 GB limit, supports TLS-encrypted IMAP, POP3, and SMTP

I do use Thunderbird, but I haven't tried it with Protonmail. The "bridge"
seems to be necessary because of their encryption discipline.

Unfortunately my ISP have no such service and I don't know any
reasonable paid service which provide me features I want. Usually fee is
just to have better limits - more disk space, more emails, etc.
In fact I don't need it. I think my requirements are quite basic: just
regular email client (means POP3/IMAP) and no madness with spam
filtering. Yahoo looked good when I started with RACF-L, but thing
changed completely with IBM-MAIN.
BTW: I wish listserv would have POP3/IMAP interface. It would simplify
many things.

Email Providers

2021-01-25 Thread Steve Smith
--> protonmail.com, free, but worth paying for. Thunderbird is possible,
although more difficult than normal.

I think there are many reasons to avoid gmail, although I do not
(obviously). yahoo is garbage; and the tech world still wonders why they
still exist. Maybe big G secretly subsidises them to have some pretend
competition for lawsuit purposes.

Anyway, can't say I'll miss the huge disclaimer your former employer
appended to your posts.
