Did you press F1 after getting RC=08 in ISMF. great! the SYS3 dataset still may have caused the issue if you're in a protect all configuration. I still have the notes from z/os 1.3 on how to recreate a SCDS from an ACDS. good stuff and good that it's still a valid fix ! Check your TSO PROFILE and make sure you are not suppressing them You could also check the DFHSM STC Task for the messages, they could be there as well.
