Thanks for this feedback. X11 can also be installed directly through Macports.
The port is called xorg-server. So here is the modified command to install
Demeter with X11. Follow this with a logout and login.
sudo port install xorg-server demeter

Try typing echo $DISPLAY in a terminal window and see if you get a result. If
you don't then you may not have X11installed.

I installed Athena on OSX 10.8.5 using Macports. The error given below
prints to the terminal when I run Athena, and Athena does not generate any
plots. If there is any further information I can provide that would be
