Thank you for your advice. Well the laptop is a pretty old one and the HDD is ata.
Did you try connecting it to another system via a {,e}sata to usb adapter cable? The most basic version is available in ebay. I haven’t tried that yet as I don’t have the adapter with me at the moment. But I have ordered one. If the BIOS works fine, then were you not able to boot a live-usb session at all? BIOS works fine. It even detects the HDD. But I was unable to boot even from a live-usb. After I removed the HDD from the laptop, I am able to boot from live-usb, confirming that the issue was with HDD.
