If you are referring to the default image viewer for ubuntu, eye of gnome,
from version 2.30.0 has the feature to play animations of gif images. I
think updating this software to the latest release will solve your problem.

I want to view gif images in the Gnome Image Viewer. Although it does show
the image it does not play the animation. I have to fire up Gimp to do that!
Any way around this problem?

You can try opening it using any browser.
