Absolutely. It's the way you deal with it that counts.

I usually let them use my Ubuntu laptop (replete with eye candy)
for a few minutes and they are hooked.

Excellent example of an encouraging way to deal with it.

On a side note, this may be slightly controversial, it also helps
sometimes to use Ubuntu without the Linux.

Huh. Bigots are people too, I guess ;-)

Has anyone on this list managed to get a refund from any of the major
laptop companies. They all package Windows OS with their
laptops. Would be interested if anyone has managed to get a refund.

That will be cool if any one has managed to do that. Kinda like the
Windoze Refund Day as in the Revolution OS documentary.

I don't think refund for Windoze is possible, but you can try this
offer from Mandriva to get some discount against your Windoze.

No bigotry here.. It's a fact that Ubuntu has an amazing PR.. So good
infact that hard core windoze users don't flinch anymore when I use
the F-word (FOSS) in combination with it :)

A windows refund is possible, and your full legal right. Microsoft
knows this and honours it.
Just that so far in india no one has bothered to exercise it.
Also you must ensure you do not install it, or in presence of
witnesses click on 'do not accept' or similar, for the end user
license agreement.
Google to find out more.

I heard that for xp there is an accept/reject button - but that is
apparently not there for vista - there is only an accept button.

[ilugd] news: microsoft 'cajoles' ngos to support 'oxml'. business standard

2008-03-06 Thread Linux Lingam
dear all,

happened to pick up th papers today. business standard. delhi edition.
7 march 2008.
on the front page, a small para on the left-panel points to a story.
an inside page has a large story with quotes from rajmathur, venkatesh
hariharan, and some unnamed microsoft spokesman.
interestingly, the microsoft spokesman does not deny the handing out
of the letters, and even goes on to state that the 'positive' response
is even more than they had anticipated, and how more NGOs have joined
in, and other blah-blah.

the news also hit the hindu newspaper a few days ago, as well as linux.com
