That might be it, but I think it's mostly Windows that's more "loaded" with
myriad software "pieces" (sucking CPU cycles and hence power).
One hint it's when you boot the two OSes: on my iMac OSX 10.6 it's operative
in less than one minute (55"); OTOH, Windows 7 on the same iMac takes at
least 2-3 minutes to be responsive.
And it's not because of my hardware; on my girlfriend's relatively recent
Core i7 laptop, Windows takes around the same time (2-3') to be responsive
after boot.

What I take from these observations, it's that Windows is - like most
Microsoft software - quite bloated :-)
