I currently keep iTunes on a separate, external HD due to the fact that there’s
not enough room for it on the main HD (capacity 250GB, but iTunes currenlty
uses a bit over 500GB)

I had this happening to several mice, when they become old.
I think it's the microswitch becoming faulty/unreliable, hence when you
press the button it clicks, then it "loses"
