All right, thanks! They exist. Would one work for what I need: printing
wirelessly to my old Laserwriter, which has no USB port, only Ethernet? Or
will the AXp still see it as Ethernet? --Bill

It should work. You may need to give a fixed IP address to your LaserWriter,
look in the LW manual for 'Unix Setup'; so long as it's set up so that your
Verizon-supplied device is set as the DHCP server for the entire network,
Bonjour might find the LW on the network.

Turns out Verizon's network cannot be extended according to he popup. So
that takes care of that. C'est la guerre. But I have just realized I don't
even need the wireless piece, I can just run the cable up through the floor
and into VZ's router.

Sheesh. Duh, Spencer.

Here's Apple's instructions on doing this.

The Airport Express SHOULD pass through ethernet connections. If it does not,
give up on the AE and go get a cheap or used Linksys wireless router with
ethernet ports and follow the Linksys directions.

I would try connecting directly to the AE with no other devices connected. It's
possible that there is a misconfiguration between the AE and you're network.

You may need to manually configure you're wired connection to get them to talk.

Do the update then configure the AE for you're setup.

 The Airport Express only has one Ethernet port, which you need for connection
 to a Wireless Modem or a Router.

Only if it's your only wireless router...if you're using it in bridged mode,
it'll work fine, essentially becoming a wireless ethernet adapter for the
printer.

===[WAN]===[WiFi router 1] ((([AP Express]=printer.

You have to get into the deeper parts of the Airport Setup software, but it can
be done.

What if it's Verizon's FiOS wireless router (which just got installed
yesterday, despite VZ's apparent determination to drive us off as potential
customers)? Or could I then insert my own wireless router in between VZ and
AEx, in true Rube Goldberg fashion? Like this:

===[WAN]===[VZ router] ((([Spencer router] ((([AP
Express]=printer.

Or is it just not feasible (he asked, wearily)?

Thanks again! Bill

You could do this, Mr. Goldberg, but I think the bit with the bowling ball and
the parakeet in the middle might prove to be unstable over time :-P

Just do it like this:

===[WAN]===[VZ router] ((([AP Express]=printer.

Or even:

===[WAN]===[VZ router]=printer, because the Verizon router should have some
ethernet ports.

Unless the point is to move the printer out of wired ethernet range?

The Airport Express only has one Ethernet port, which you need for connection
to a Wireless Modem or a Router. You can do the above easily with an Airport
Extreme Base Station, that has four Ethernet ports. I have had such
arrangement with a LaserWriter 16/600PS for many years.
