Hmm...turns out the shop couldn't reproduce the problem. He said he blew out
several bagloads of dust and re-seated everything and it worked fine for
him. Makes me think maybe I hadn't seated one of the new RAM sticks fully.
But who knows. $100 gone and everything's fine. C'est la guerre.
fixed, what's the conventional wisdom nowadays for brands
and capabilities? (I don't feel the need to spend boatloads of

Thank you both for this information. Unfortunately I am not in a position
to buy another external HD so I will have to manage with what I have. In
reading through your comments, I realized that there's no need for the
iTunes backup to be in a separate partition (at least, I think this is so);
