While I agree, that the IE dependancy is a bad step, I seriously can't understand why you don't have the newest service pack *and* rollup package *and* hotfixes running on a server that is accessible from the Internet (due to the nature of a mail server). With all the security holes, worms and viruses around I would call this grossly negligent from an admin running such a server (even when a corporate firewall blocks all ports except 25, etc., since you always should *close* holes, not *hide* them).
