Hi Todd, We're adding better mobile support in IMail v11. I've posted a some screenshots of IMail v11 at http://blogs.imailserver.com. I have had several people over the past week email and call with questions about setting up smart phones to get their email. This isn't totally uncommon, but in the past they emailed me for their settings and then had the provider help them set it up. Now they are coming to me. I'm sure I could figure it out, but it got me thinking about what the "typical" way of setting them up is. Are people POPing mail to their phone? Leaving a copy on the server for their desktop? Using IMAP? I have one person in the process now. They had been getting everything to their desktop, and would like that to be an option. So I said we may want to use IMAP for both then. On my Win based Treo, I use the verizon wireless sync option to keep my phone and outlook synced up. The big advantage of that over both accessing POP3 is that when you delete and answer emails you can see those same results in both places. You do need to always have the desktop running though. RE: [IMail Forum] Smart Phones
Hi Todd, In my experience you don't need to up an IMAP account which will increase the disk space usage on your server. BlackBerry's and Treo's you can set up to POP the account which will leave a copy of the message on the server to download to their desktop at a later time. Treo's are done on the phone with the MS OS, BB's you need to do it on your providers BB web site. RE: [IMail Forum] Smart Phones
What I usually recommend is to use POP on the desktop/laptop with a leave on server and delete after 3 to 5 days. I set the smart phone with IMAP. This way, the users can get their email everywhere without building huge mailboxes on the server. Keeping 3 to 5 days is usually enough as the phone is there to get mail when you don't have access to a computer (over nights and weekends). It is not (imo) there to manage all the mail. If there's messages that needs to be kept on the phone, you just have to move them to a subfolder (and subscribe the IMAP client to it) and it won't be deleted as the POP only reads/delete from the main Inbox. This is what I do with my iphone and it works great.
