Thanks Brian. That got rid of it. Silence is golden when it comes to
login.
Audio does work correctly once I've logged in. I went to my favorite
youtube video, and the sound for it worked just fine.

Two questions:
1) is there a way to make the change permanent?
2) how do I read the current setting of the system beep? I mean, I'd
like to see what are the settings that cause the screech.

in?), but if you're using gdm, try adding:
SoundOnLogin=false
to the [greeter] section of /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf (or create a
