Nudrat ji the picture above may or may not be Bridelia. But the black
berries of Bridelia retusa take time to turn black, before that they are of
various colours- grey- green, green, yellowish, half green yellow maroon
and than turn black . Infact, most of the time I have seen them in unripe
form only. You may check my pictures of the same posted last week.

However i could be incorrect. Experts please comment

Adenanthera vasika does not figure in Kew Plant List, IPNI or GRIN, and
evidently not a published name. Adenathera is a genus of

in at least IPNI and Kew Plant List, which list all published names. But
strangely there are so many sources on the net mentioning this name (as

From: Bhatt Sweta bhattsw...@gmail.com

Subject: Re: [efloraofindia:64988] Kalatope id al140311a
To: Rashida Atthar atthar.rash...@gmail.com

These might be the probable reasons
1. Annual plant; so one can observe all the phenological stages within a
years span. Acutally Arabidopsis can complete its entire life cycle in six
weeks. The central stem that produces flowers grows after about three weeks,
and the flowers naturally self-pollinate. In the lab Arabidopsis may be
grown in petri plates or pots, under fluorescent lights or in a
greenhouse--which makes it easy to study the entire plant in a short span as
well
2. Earlier it was thought to have the smallest genome among the flowering
plants - this might have led the scientist to take it up for research (now
the plant to have the smallest genome is the Genus
*Genliseahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genlisea
*, Lamiales with 63.4 Mbp vs 157 of* Arabidopsis thaliana*)
3. Only 5 pair of Chromosomes, convenience in studying them
4. The small size of the plant is convenient for cultivation in a small
space and it produces many seeds.
5. Further, the selfing nature of this plant assists genetic experiments.
6. Finally, the plant is well suited for light microscopy analysis as the
young seedlings on the whole, and their roots in particular, are relatively
translucent.
7. This, together with their small size, facilitates live cell imaging using
both fluorescence and laser scanning microscopy.
8. By wet mounting seedlings in water or in culture media, plants may be
imaged un-invasively, obviating the need for fixation and sectioning and
allowing time-lapse measurements.

Each of the above criteria leads to *Arabidopsis thaliana* being valued as a
genetic model organism.

These are some of the reasons which (might have) led to selection of the
plant for the Genome Research Project.

   Hi,

Attached is a photo of the the liana, *Ancistrocladus heyneanus* from
   Ancistrocladaceae seen at Matheran.
*Ancistrocladus* is the only genus in this family. According to Cooke,
 of
the two species found in India, only one of the 10 species from this
 genus
has been reported to occur in main-land India while the other species,
 *A.
tectorius* is endemic to the Andaman Islands.
While he mentions it to be 'pretty common in the Ghats', it is
 endangered
and endemic to the Western Ghats.
Recent findings that the species *A. korupensis* has potential
 anti-AIDS
activity had led to interest in this genus. Unfortunately, while this
finding is a good news for humans, its a sad news for this genus as
 this
   will now probably be exploited.

Sadly was unable to take photos of the leaves as there were at a height
 and
in a direction which didn't allow proper photography.
The leaves of this plant are very peculiar and it has a tendril with
   several hook-like structures for support.

Re: [efloraofindia:65038] Herb for id from Kodaikanal 271010MK3

2011-03-15 Thread Muthu Karthick
Dear all,
The distinct 3-nerved leaves (*L.interrupta*) are absent here in the plant I
posted. In addition, the leaves are smaller (3 X 2 cm) here when compared to
the *L.interrupta*. Any other clue to this small herb?
