[efloraofindia:79177] Campsis confusion: looking for Campsis grandiflora

2011-09-02 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Genus Campsis has been confusing me a lot for quite some time. Traditionally
two species of this genus are recognized as common garden trumpet creepers:

*Campsis grandiflora*: leaflets 7-9; glabrous beneath; 4-7 cm long, paler
green; calyx 5-lobed to middle; flowers orange to scarlet, corolla tube
nearly one and half times as long as calyx, limb nearly 5-6 cm across;
capsule 10-15 cm long, obtuse at apex, without beak.

*Campsis radicans*: leaflets 9-11, pubescent beneath especially along
midreib and main veins, dark green above; calyx shortly 5-lobed, lobes less
than 1/3 the tube; flowers orange with scarlet limb, 2-3 times as long as
calyx, usually less than 4 cm across; capsule cylindric-oblong, 7-12 cm
long, keeled along sutures, beaked at apex.

I have been following the specimens of Campsis in Delhi, Kashmir, California
and other places and frankly have not been able to locate a true sample of
C. gandiflora. Most of the samples found in Kashmir and Delhi which look
like C. grandiflora do not bear fruits, flowers fall off when mature and
number of leaflets varry from 7-11 (-13). This sterile hybrid is actually C.
X tagliabuana, a hybrid between C. radicans and C. grandiflora. Both
specimens at at FOI (C. radicans as well as C. grandiflora) i think belong
to this hybrid species, which is propagated by cuttings.

*I would be extremely happy if any member is able to find and can upload a
true specimen of C. grandiflora (7-9 leaflets, leaflets glabrous beneath,
calyx divided up to middle, corolla tube 1 1/2 times as long as calyx, more
important it produces fruits which are 10-15 cm long and without beak at
tip)*

Uploading C. x tagliabuana from Kashmir, very commonly growing in gardens
and private houses. This hybrid species has a number of cultivars. This one
 from Kashmir is 'Madam Galen'

 Is this Dombeya wallichi?
You had identified another Dombeya with slightly darker flowers recently.
This was taken at Kodaikanal in Oct, 2008

Most logical scenario I can think of is this:
It grows upright not gnarled branches as in frangipani or other
 plumerias...

I found this in a genealogy site

 LATINE - ENGLISH DICTIONARY

 pudica = chaste, upright
pudica virgo = virgin young woman, chaste [clean, decent] virgin

 http://www.genealogy.ro/dictionary/lat_eng_p.htm

  http://www.genealogy.ro/dictionary/lat_eng_p.htm
Plumeria pudica is not bashful but grows upright… may be that’s why its
 called pudica

 this is all ...
It was named in 1760 or there abouts... by

*: *Jacquin, Nicolaus (or Nicolaas) von

by not enough latin knowledge in my skull to decipher the description
 etc...

 good nite .

  var. *robustum* Stapf

Common names: Indian Napellus, Ban-bal-nag, Beshmolo, Mori

Tall leafy plant, up to 90 cm with ruberous root; leaves similar, though
upper slightly smaller, 3-8 cm broad, cut alomost up to base into linear
segments; flowers blue or purplish, in up to 30 cm long racemes; upper sepal
curved back helmet-shaped, lateral oborbicular to nearly square; petals
(nectaries) 2-5 with 5-7 mm long claw; carpels usually 5, follicles oblong,
 10-15 mm, truncate.

Often confused with A. napellus, this species is distributed from Chitral
to Kashmir at higher altitudes. The whole plant is highly toxic - simple
skin contact has caused numbness in some people. The dried root is
analgesic, anodyne, diaphoretic, diuretic, irritant and sedative. The root
is a rich source of active alkaloids, containing around 3%. It is best
harvested as soon as the plant dies down in the autumn. This is a very
poisonous plant and should only be used with extreme caution and under the
 supervision of a qualified practitioner.

Photographed from Apharwat, Kashmir in August, growing along forest
margins. It has also been introduced into newly developed alpine garden near
Kongdor, middle stop of Gondola above Gulmarg.

*Campsis radicans* (Linn.) Seem. in J. Bot. 5:372. 1867
syn: *Bignonia* *radicans* Linn., *Tecoma* *radicans* Juss.

Genus Campsis has been confusing me a lot for quite some time.
Traditionally two species of this genus are recognized as common garden
 trumpet creepers:

*Campsis grandiflora*: leaflets 7-9; glabrous beneath; 4-7 cm long, paler
green; calyx 5-lobed to middle; flowers orange to scarlet, corolla tube
 nearly one and half times as long as calyx, limb nearly 5-6 cm across;
capsule 10-15 cm long, obtuse at apex, without beak.

*Campsis radicans*: leaflets 9-11, pubescent beneath especially along
midreib and main veins, dark green above; calyx shortly 5-lobed, lobes less
than 1/3 the tube; flowers orange with scarlet limb, 2-3 times as long as
calyx, usually less than 4 cm across; capsule cylindric-oblong, 7-12 cm
long, keeled along sutures, beaked at apex.

I have been following the specimens of Campsis in Delhi, Kashmir,
California and other places and frankly have not been able to locate a true
sample of C. gandiflora. Most of the samples found in Kashmir and Delhi
which look like C. grandiflora do not bear fruits, flowers fall off when
mature and number of leaflets varry from 7-11 (-13). This sterile hybrid is
 actually C. X tagliabuana, a hybrid between C. radicans and C. grandiflora.
Both specimens at at FOI (C. radicans as well as C. grandiflora) i think
belong to this hybrid species, which is propagated by cuttings.

Uploading C. radicans commonly cultivated in Kashmir, flowering from June
to September. Frankly I have still to come across a true specimen of C.
 radicans in Delhi.

2011-09-02 Thread Giby Kuriakose
Tank you for your detailed mail. It is getting interested.

As far as I know, in F.parasitica, figs are not born on separate leafless
branches as seen in the pictures given.

Dear Raju Das Ji, Please go through the conversation/s and put your thoughts
in. It would be nice to know whether the ripened fruits turns red or not.

Regards
Giby

Gibyji, the link you have cited doesnt proof that its not F. parasitica,

 another plant to compare...
and i dont think that F.parasitica fruits always comes in pair..?

and coming to F. oligodon, i your link of Fl. of China its clearly written
ripe fruits are red, where in this case its yellowish-orange..

In Ficus parasitica in the figs are in the leaf axis mostly paired from a

Therefore the plant in the picture is not Ficus parasitica.

Please check the species Ficus oligodon in the following link and

Thank you very much for the detailed information and wonderful pictures that
are self explanatory this matches with the illustration and description in

I still dont think that your first posting was of F. parasitica because of
the figs are in separate leafless branches.

 Dear Gibyji,
Thank you so much for leading the discussion, as this fig makes me little
confusion. Firstly, let me tell about this species… This is a moderate (*c
 * 4-5m tall) tree and the ripened fig are orange-yellow, not red and size
is 1-1.5cm across. There were no ridges seen in this figs. Secondly, As far
as I know, F oligodon is tall tree with wide crown and figs have longitudinal
ridges and borne in cluster. So I have attached few pics from my stock.
Hope this could be F oligodon. Moreover, the shape of leaves is different in
both the species, in F oligodon it is obovate but here it is elliptic. Size
of fig in F oligodon is about 3-5cm and pear shaped and red in colour (as in
 this pic 1).

Gibyji,
You are right. I too dont think this could be F parasitica. My first choice
is F conglobata. Because the habitat as described is wet places in
semievergreen forest matches with this one, another point is fig borne on
special branches near the base of the stem which is prominent here. But have
doubt on leaves arrangement. I dont have detail literature on this species.
So if anyone in the Efl group have description on F conglobata please share
with us.

I still dont think that your first posting was of F. parasitica because of
the figs are in separate leafless branches.

 Dear Gibyji,
Thank you so much for leading the discussion, as this fig makes me little
confusion. Firstly, let me tell about this species… This is a moderate (*
c* 4-5m tall) tree and the ripened fig are orange-yellow, not red and
size is 1-1.5cm across. There were no ridges seen in this figs. Secondly, As
far as I know, F oligodon is tall tree with wide crown and figs have
 longitudinal
ridges and borne in cluster.

Dear Raju Das Ji, Please go through the conversation/s and put your

 or not.

In Ficus parasitica in the figs are in the leaf axis mostly paired from

Therefore the plant in the picture is not Ficus parasitica.

It was a favourite game in our childhood. We would pluck gently and hold the
fruit head in hand. Ask the other person whether he/she wants a turban or
cap. If other person wants a turban we would blow gently so that only a few
achenes fall off and it looks like a turban. If the other person opts for
cap, we would blow hard so that all achenes fall off. If a few remain you
have failed in your game and visa versa.

Another cv is red ,generally used in Gujrat.

2011-09-02 Thread Madhuri Raut
Thank you Nidhanji
After you identified it I just found from the net its medicinal values and
was astonished
*Uses : *Oxalis Corniculata plant is anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory,
astringent, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, lithontripic,
stomachic and styptic. It is used in the treatment of influenza, fever,
urinary tract infections, enteritis, diarrhea, traumatic injuries, sprains
and poisonous snake bites. An infusion can be used as a wash to rid children
of hookworms. The plant is a good source of vitamin C and is used as an
antiscorbutic in the treatment of scurvy.

The leaves are used as an antidote to poisoning by the seeds of Datura spp.,
arsenic and mercury. The leaf juice is applied to insect bites, burns and
skin eruptions. It has an antibacterial activity.

Yellow, orange and red to brown dyes are obtained from the flowers. The
boiled whole plant yields a yellow dye. An infusion of leaves is used to
remove opacities of the cornea and is dropped into the eyes for itching
lids. A decoction of leaves is used as a gargle.
