[efloraofindia:79177] Campsis confusion: looking for Campsis grandiflora
Genus Campsis has been confusing me a lot for quite some time. Traditionally two species of this genus are recognized as common garden trumpet creepers: *Campsis grandiflora*: leaflets 7-9; glabrous beneath; 4-7 cm long, paler green; calyx 5-lobed to middle; flowers orange to scarlet, corolla tube nearly one and half times as long as calyx, limb nearly 5-6 cm across; capsule 10-15 cm long, obtuse at apex, without beak. *Campsis radicans*: leaflets 9-11, pubescent beneath especially along midreib and main veins, dark green above; calyx shortly 5-lobed, lobes less than 1/3 the tube; flowers orange with scarlet limb, 2-3 times as long as calyx, usually less than 4 cm across; capsule cylindric-oblong, 7-12 cm long, keeled along sutures, beaked at apex. I have been following the specimens of Campsis in Delhi, Kashmir, California and other places and frankly have not been able to locate a true sample of C. gandiflora. Most of the samples found in Kashmir and Delhi which look like C. grandiflora do not bear fruits, flowers fall off when mature and number of leaflets varry from 7-11 (-13). This sterile hybrid is actually C. X tagliabuana, a hybrid between C. radicans and C. grandiflora. Both specimens at at FOI (C. radicans as well as C. grandiflora) i think belong to this hybrid species, which is propagated by cuttings. *I would be extremely happy if any member is able to find and can upload a true specimen of C. grandiflora (7-9 leaflets, leaflets glabrous beneath, calyx divided up to middle, corolla tube 1 1/2 times as long as calyx, more important it produces fruits which are 10-15 cm long and without beak at tip)* * * -- Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018. Often confused with A. napellus, this species is distributed from Chitral to Kashmir at higher altitudes. The whole plant is highly toxic - simple skin contact has caused numbness in some people. The dried root is analgesic, anodyne, diaphoretic, diuretic, irritant and sedative. The root is a rich source of active alkaloids, containing around 3%. It is best harvested as soon as the plant dies down in the autumn. This is a very poisonous plant and should only be used with extreme caution and under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. Gibyji, You are right. I too dont think this could be F parasitica. My first choice is F conglobata. Because the habitat as described is wet places in semievergreen forest matches with this one, another point is fig borne on special branches near the base of the stem which is prominent here. But have doubt on leaves arrangement. I dont have detail literature on this species. So if anyone in the Efl group have description on F conglobata please share with us. Usha di It was a favourite game in our childhood. We would pluck gently and hold the fruit head in hand. Ask the other person whether he/she wants a turban or cap. If other person wants a turban we would blow gently so that only a few achenes fall off and it looks like a turban. If the other person opts for cap, we would blow hard so that all achenes fall off. If a few remain you have failed in your game and visa versa. -- Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018. Thank you Nidhanji After you identified it I just found from the net its medicinal values and was astonished *Uses : *Oxalis Corniculata plant is anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, lithontripic, stomachic and styptic. It is used in the treatment of influenza, fever, urinary tract infections, enteritis, diarrhea, traumatic injuries, sprains and poisonous snake bites. An infusion can be used as a wash to rid children of hookworms. The plant is a good source of vitamin C and is used as an antiscorbutic in the treatment of scurvy. The leaves are used as an antidote to poisoning by the seeds of Datura spp., arsenic and mercury. The leaf juice is applied to insect bites, burns and skin eruptions. It has an antibacterial activity. Yellow, orange and red to brown dyes are obtained from the flowers. The boiled whole plant yields a yellow dye. An infusion of leaves is used to remove opacities of the cornea and is dropped into the eyes for itching lids. A decoction of leaves is used as a gargle.
