Dear Sir,

Chances of* Indigofera* *cassioides* DC. are higher because leaflets in
images are 13-15, leaf apex emarginate or obtuse, pods appear to be
straight.

*Indigofera tinctoria* - leaflets 7-11, obtuse or apiculate.
*Indigofera suffruticosa* - leaflets 11-15(-19), apex acute to rarely
rounded and racemes not more than 3cm.

This is clearly a member of the Fabaceae (Leguminosae).

Photos not in close-up, the final image out-of-focus with the flowers and
foliage unopened. The image showing the young pods does not show much
detail. Straggly, maybe depauperate, is the correct description for this
specimen. All-in-all, this makes it much harder to be sure.

My initial thoughts are an immature 'Lucerne' or 'Alfalfa' *Medicago
sativa* - the location fits as is cultivated in irrigated fields but open
to other suggestions.

Defintely Artemisia but this is a large and difficult genus
identification-wise. In the past I relied upon
staff at the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew naming e.g. the pressed specimens we
gathered during the University of
Southampton Ladakh Expedition in 1980 to the Suru Valley (a duplicate set
of specimens was deposited in the herbarium of the
University of Kashmir at Srinagar).

Stewart in 'An Annotated Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of Pakistan and
Kashmir' (1972) lists 22 species of Artemisia.

The large flower-heads made me initially think of *A,macrocephala* but the
specimen here does not come close to
matching what I understand to be this species, flower or foliage-wise.

I have yet to spend much time scrutinising this genus in Ladakh, so would
be pleased if anyone can suggest possibilities
or knows which species it is, with confidence.

A difficult task unless somebody is well acquainted with the flora in
different seasons.
The reddish thing visible in the picture is a rosette of leaves which may
be of some species of Saxifraga or may be not.
Cottony white leaves may be of any Asteraceae member.
And reddish rosette and cottony leaves are not the same plant.
May be some one having expertise in flora of Khardung La may have a better
idea.

Re: [efloraofindia:251626] Identity of a Plant

2016-09-19 Thread Giby Kuriakose

Anyway, it doesn't look like Ranunculus. It is more likely a species of
Antidesma.

Giby
