 Dear All,

Attached are some pictures of a tree whose leaves look a lot like Cedrus
deodara, and yet the tree itself looks a little different! I haven't seen
the cones of this tree, therefore I am a little confused. The leaves are
dark green, sharp and stiff and grow in clusters of 20-30, but the way it
has branched out, and it's perfect conical shape, look distinctly different
 than the other Deodars.

Any help with the ID would be very helpful. There are two trees like this
(one very young, the other old) where I live along with many Deodars and
 Chir Pine.

Re: [efloraofindia:206536] AKNOV08 Please identify this Elaeocarpus sp.

2014-11-18 Thread N Arun Kumar
Usha di they are in two distinct families..Elaeocarpaceae and Sapotaceae.
You must have confused the flowers as they are both white but other than
that, they are very different.
For Elaeocarpaceae -
*Perianth* *with distinct calyx and corolla, or sepaline (corolla often
missing)*; 4–5, or 8–10; 1 whorled, or 2 whorled; isomerous. Calyx 4, or 5;
1 whorled; polysepalous, or gamosepalous; regular; usually valvate.
Epicalyx absent. *Corolla* when present, 4, or 5; 1 whorled; polypetalous
(usually), or gamopetalous (rarely); *valvate (or valvate-induplicate,
never contorted)*; regular. Petals often fringed.
For Sapotaceae-
*Perianth* *with distinct calyx and corolla*; 6–16(–20); 2 whorled, or 3
whorled; isomerous. *Calyx* 4, or 5, or 6, or 8; 1 whorled (then 5), or 2
whorled (then 2+2, 3+3 or 4+4); *polysepalous*; when one whorled,
imbricate. *Corolla* 3–6, or 8, or 10; 1 whorled, or 2 whorled (and
sometimes ostensibly 2-whorled, through the lobes of the single whorl
bearing dorsal appendages like themselves); appendiculate (with dorsal
appendages on the lobes), or not appendiculate; *gamopetalous*; imbricate.
